Excerpt from Benevolent Institutions, 1910 The Eleventh Census (1890) placed the statistics of benevolent institutions on the same basis as those for almshouses, prisons, ctc., and called for, as nearly as possible, the same information as to their inmates as for the population at large. While the arrangement was by classes of institutions, probably as the most con venient way of securing returns, the results were set forth by characteristics of inmates and the institutional element practically dropped out of sight, the emphasis being upon the inmates.
