Excerpt from The Restoration of Belief When these Tracts were projected it was intended that they should embrace the principal subjects that belong to the modern argument con cerning the truth of the Christian system; and I then believed that. I should be able to carry out my purpose at short and regular intervals. I have not found it possible to do this; and in fact many months have separated the Second of these publications from the Third; nor ought I now to believe that, at any time to which I could pledge myself, I shall be able to resume my task. Excerpt from Belief T is said that the block of marble from which Michael Angelo called forth his mighty statue of David, had been brought to Florence for another purpose. Some earlier artist had designed another subject for it, and failed in the attempt to realize it. But An gelo, -seeing the big block and noting its con tour and inclination, foresaw the heroic figure imprisoned there, and released him with blow on blow of his redeeming mallet. Excerpt from The Faith of a Quaker There arise also the insistent questions which beset all mystics, and which in Quakerism demanded a corporate, instead of an individual, answer. Was the light infallible? Was the claim to it an assumption of spiritual exaltation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Evolution of Beliefs Many years since a preacher Of the evangelical type, who had been informed by one Of his Christian members that I was an infidel, preached a sermon for my benefit. Being at this time a little unsettled in my belief and Skeptical In my views Of the Bible form of relig ion, the effect Of the preacher's sermon has caused me to examine the subject Of many religions to fix on some true and unequivocal form of belief. Otherwise, continuing to profess a belief in some thing, our consciousness apprehends as not true, or thus to make my trust unfaithful in its adherence to truth, I would yet have remained an infidel. Although my belief was unsettled, it has not proven to be an illusion, for that is an idea presented to the mind's eye Of something that does not in reality exist. Nor my belief has not been, in its form, that Of an hallucination; it was not the subject Of an illusion. Then my belief was Of a valid form. I believed in something tangible; but similar to all those who pro fess to be believers in Christianity, I had been held under the influence Of a delusion. Excerpt from Byways of Belief If the search for truth be the supreme object of the Christian Religion, there is, of course, no inaccuracy in Mr Lloyd Thomas's analogy with the doctrine of evolution and the British Association. But Catholics would altogether deny that the Church was built as a Society for spiritual research. It was surely built to promulgate truth and to band men together as comrades in arms. Similes are dangerous things, but the metaphor of an army is much more fitting to the idea of the Church than the metaphor of a hunting party in doubt as to the quarry it hunts. It is not a common search but a common find that unites us. This is not to be taken as meaning that the Catholics of any particular age are to pride themselves on the possession of the whole truth, but the very object of their being banded together is that they may teach and live that truth which they do possess, and that, by living it, truth may be added to them in greater measure. The search for truth has been denied by Church ofificialdom, and its advocates have exalted it out of due proportion into the first essential of a Christian Church. Excerpt from The Bedrock of Belief, the Foundations of Religion The present work concludes the line of thought set forth in the two companion vol umes, Christ's Masterpiece and He's Only Son. Combined, the three courses of lec tures, which are given to the public in the form in which they were delivered as Lenten Lectures in St. Francis Xavier (college) Church, form a compendious exposition of Christian apologetics. Excerpt from The Domain of Belief The three cardinal principles of Religion are Freedom of the Will, Immortality, and Belief in God. I purpose to consider each in its turn. The instructed reader will probably exclaim, Is it not waste of time to' trouble one's head about speculative questions Which have been thrashed out till not a grain of mental aliment is left in their empty husks Be the answer What it may, this much is certain, the last word about any one of the three Will never be spoken. So long as it is the lot of man to suffer, some form _of religious belief, however crude or however mystical, Will assuredly) be his ark of refuge.
