Pike County is a predominately rural county in southern Indiana which has been declining in population for several decades. This has been partially a result of persons leaving the farm, and partially the result of a decline in mining employment. The County has several major problems including large areas of strip mine wastes, poor roads, and innefficient [sic] land use patterns. There are signs, however, that the county may be entering a period of relative economic and population stability. Cf. Abstract.
