Functional analysis is a broad mathematical area with strong connections to many domains within mathematics and physics. This book, based on a first-year graduate course taught by Robert J. Zimmer at the University of Chicago, is a complete, concise presentation of fundamental ideas and theorems of functional analysis. It introduces essential notions and results from many areas of mathematics to which functional analysis makes important contributions, and it demonstrates the unity of perspective and technique made possible by the functional analytic approach. This book focuses on extraction of pertinent information from statistical test outputs, in order to write result sections and/or accompanying tables and/or figures. The book is divided into two encompassing sections: Part I – Basic Statistical Tests and Part II – Advanced Statistical Tests. Part I includes 9 basic statistical tests, and Part II includes 7 advanced statistical tests. Each chapter provides the name of a basic or advanced statistical test, a brief description, examples of when to use each, a sample scenario, and a sample results section write-up. Depending on the test and need, most chapters provide a table and/or figure to accompany the write-up. The purpose of the book is to provide researchers with a reference manual for writing results sections and tables/figures in scholarly works. The authors fill a gap in research support manuals by focusing on sample write-ups and tables/figures for given statistical tests. The book assists researchers by eliminating the need to comb through numerous publications to determine necessary information to report, as well as correct APA format to use, at the close of analyses.

Around 1978, a mutation of associative algebras was introduced to generalize the formalism of classical mechanics as well as quantum mechanics. This volume presents the first book devoted to a self-contained and detailed treatment of the mathematical theory of mutation algebras, which is based on research in this subject over the past fifteen years. The book also deals with a broader class of algebras, mutations of alternative algebras, which are a natural generalization of mutations of associative algebras. A complete structure theory, including automorphisms, derivations and certain representations, is given for mutations of artinian alternative algebras, and, in particular, of Cayley--Dickson algebras. Since the mutation algebras do not form a variety, the structure theory explored in this volume takes quite a different approach from the standard theory of nonassociative algebras and provides an important interplay with the theory of noncommutative (associative) algebras through mutation parameters. New simple algebras and open problems presented in this book will stimulate additional research and applications in the area. This book will be valuable to graduate students, mathematicians and physicists interested in applications of algebras.

Presenting the first systematic treatment of the behavior of Néron models under ramified base change, this book can be read as an introduction to various subtle invariants and constructions related to Néron models of semi-abelian varieties, motivated by concrete research problems and complemented with explicit examples. Néron models of abelian and semi-abelian varieties have become an indispensable tool in algebraic and arithmetic geometry since Néron introduced them in his seminal 1964 paper. Applications range from the theory of heights in Diophantine geometry to Hodge theory. We focus specifically on Néron component groups, Edixhoven’s filtration and the base change conductor of Chai and Yu, and we study these invariants using various techniques such as models of curves, sheaves on Grothendieck sites and non-archimedean uniformization. We then apply our results to the study of motivic zeta functions of abelian varieties. The final chapter contains a list of challenging open questions. This book is aimed towards researchers with a background in algebraic and arithmetic geometry.
