The Autobiography of a Repaired Physician : Mental Health as Seen from Both Sides of the Desk is a trilogy. Book I deals with my life before, during and after the emergence of an attack of bipolar disorder. The shattering consequences of the disorder and the personal history that precede it are discussed in great clinical and personal detail. My chief concern is that the reader comprehend how the past, present, and future come into play in understanding the outcome in the treatment of this destructive and deadly disease. Book II concerns the social stigma associated with having a history of the disorder and the many pitfalls clinically, psychologically and socially that exist for an individual, such as myself who is charged with the professional responsibility of caring for people suffering from similar affl ictions. Book III is about my adventures in the real world as I have seen it. It relates to the madness of our world in which the ever present and infuriating search for power prestige and possessions appear unfortunately to be the primary determinants of behavior in our society. Many of my closest friends have tried to dissuade me from writing about this issue because they feared I would be exposing myself to further social stigma. I feel strongly that those who have suffered from the destructive effects of the spectrum of bipolar disorder must know how treatment works and what pitfalls to avoid in treatment. As a physician it is my duty to heal myself and with the help of some very talented colleagues. I have been able to do just that. My struggle continues and in that sense more books will be written. I would like to especially acknowledge the help of my wife Barbara, who has stuck with me through thick and thin, and my children Miranda, Alexander and Victoria who love each other and me.

Excerpt from The Problem: The Autobiography of a Physician I had studied Science at two universities, and then, having turned my attention to Medicine, spent a fortune in preparing myself to meet the obstructions to the workings of the animal body, especially that of Man. Even while at school I was noted for putting strange and queer questions to those above me, who were supposed to be able to answer all questions that might come from an underling. Time and again the boldness of these questions caused surprise among my schoolmates, and was a source of great annoyance no less to them than to me, at their very strangeness, as they would suddenly arise in my mind and shape them selves into the utterances that would be continually propounded on nearly every subject that came up before them. Excerpt from Autobiography of Andrew T. Still I will inform the reader at the outset that this book is written to state facts, without being confined to exact dates and figures. Events that have made lasting impressions on my mind, stated as correctly as possible from memory, are narrated here without regard to the rules of fine writing. I never kept any notes of my life, therefore the stories may appear disconnected. When I tell you of an event it will be the truth as I remember it, regardless of how it may look in print. I want to avoid "biography" as I write, for the reason that "biographies" are so nicely worded that the reader often has to ask whom the narrator "is giving a write-up." Notwithstanding I am often told that I ought to get a professional "biographer" to write my life, I have concluded to write it myself. When I read about the battles of the Rebellion, "How Major A. T. Still charged on rebels with uplifted saber, urging his men to victory," I begin to doubt professional biographers, for I know there was not a saber drawn nor was there any yelling during a hard fight of two hours' duration between thirty thousand combatants on each side. Excerpt from Book on the Physician Himself and Things That Concern His Reputation and Success The marked favor with which it has been received by the medical press, the expressions of approval by many well-known members of the profession, and the demand for edition after edition of it, are taken as proof that such a work was greatly needed, and that it is finding its way into the hands of many of those for whom it was written. Grateful for this result, and desiring to render it more worthy of the flattering commendations it has received, the author has carefully revised the entire work, and made such alterations in it as greater experience and more mature reflection have dictated. He has also added a great deal of new material, the result of further thought and of later observations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
