When Perrin Whitman arrives in the Oregon Territory in 1843 with his missionary aunt and uncle, he immediately befriends a young Native American girl. Despite the tensions between their peoples, the two children attempt to understand each other and learn each other's cultures. But nothing prepares them for the tragedy they must face, when war breaks out.
