Coastal Structures are undergoing renewal and innovation to better serve the needs of our society, from environmental co-existence and habitat enhancement to risk management. The CSt2011 conference is the sixth in a series that highlights coastal disaster preparedness and ocean utilization in a changing climate. The conferences have frequently yielded milestone works and highly cited references in the field.

This book contains six chapters covering the sedimentary processes with examples from Asia, Turkey, and Nigeria. The book focuses on the geological characteristics, beach processes, coastal and lacustrine sedimentary archives, and the role of mangroves in controlling coastal sedimentation. In more detail, these topics are pertaining to the geological characteristics and the production response of a reservoir located offshore the Niger Delta (Nigeria), the coastal lacustrine geo-archives with the example of the Lake Bafa (Turkey), the sedimentary processes in the riparian zone of the Ruxi Tributary Channel (Three Gorges Reservoir, China), the beach morphological changes studied by means of a contour-line change model and finally, the role of the mangroves in controlling the sedimentary accretion of coastal and marine environments with the regional example of the south-eastern Asia.

Coastlines, like many things around us, are constantly evolving. Keeping pace with the changes and their development is necessary to ensure their stability and to maintain eco-equilibrium for nearshore hydrodynamics and morphodynamics. Supported with field measurements for model validation, several numerical and analytical tools are available to us to understand the physical processes in the vicinity of these water bodies.This book encompasses the engineering principles involved in field data observation, measurement, collection, and processing; the prediction of wave climate and sediment transport using measured field data; numerical modelling involving calibration and validation of the hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes; and the study of the underlying physical processes and the application of sustainable engineering measures to combat coast- and estuary-related problems.The book has three sections: The first section is an elaboration on the need for and framework of the existing management and engineering notions. They are often intricately bound with the city's social fabric, valued for direct utility purposes such as drinking water provision, or for their aesthetic, historical, cultural, and religious significance. However, oftentimes in spite of their unique spatial, socio-cultural, and economic value and 'relationship' with the city, urban lakes end up as receptacles for waste, or are infilled for development.This book traces the socio-cultural and technological dimensions at play for the protection and remediation of a tropical urban lake, and how these dimensions guide the design of need-based solutions. It explores design requirements based on the need for sensitivity to religious and cultural norms, social values and aesthetic requirements. First-hand experiences of the writers in planning and executing an urban lake remediation project in a fast-growing city and a UNESCO heritage site, are drawn as practical examples. The lessons learnt can find application in other lakes of cultural significance in tropical regions.
