William Morris was an outstanding character of many talents, being an architect, writer, social campaigner, artist and, with his Kelmscott Press, an important figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. Many of us probably know him best, however, from his superb furnishings and textile designs, intricately weaving together natural motifs in a highly stylized two-dimensional fashion influenced by medieval conventions. William Morris Masterpieces of Art offers a survey of his life and work alongside some of his finest decorative work.

This magnificent compendium is the first comprehensive exploration of the Arts and Crafts legacy in the Pacific Northwest. It traces the movement from its nineteenth-century English beginnings to its flowering in Washington and Oregon through the 1920s and beyond, weaving into a tale of idealism and devotion everything from iconic masterpieces to recent discoveries. You will meet the architects, artists, craftspeople, and entrepreneurs in Seattle, Spokane, Portland, and smaller communities throughout the region in their own words in journal entries, letters, articles, and promotional materials of the period. Included are public and private architecture, furniture, pottery and tile, metalwork, lighting, leaded and stained glass, jewelry, textiles, basketry and the influence of Native American arts, painting and printmaking, photography, graphic arts, and book design. The ideals of the Arts and Crafts movement—a celebration of craftsmanship and the creative process; an appreciation of sound construction, pleasing proportion, grace, and simplicity; and a comfortable rusticity that sees beauty in nature and honors indigenous materials—found fertile ground in Washington and Oregon. The inspired handiwork of anonymous amateurs and significant regional artists alike yielded a remarkable variety of progressive architect-designed residences, bungalows for everyone, and all manner of artistic and practical furnishings and accessories. Beautifully illustrated with nearly 400 photographs and period graphics, including rare images published here for the first time, this groundbreaking volume is an authoritative reference, a provocative story, and an irresistible treasure trove for Arts and Crafts collectors and enthusiasts everywhere.

Ceramic Masterpieces: Art, Structure andTechnology was first published by the Free Press in 1986. It won a publisher’s award for art (American Publishers’ Association, Scholarly and Technical, Honorable Mention, 1986). The copyright is held by David Kingery’s son, William D. Kingery, Jr., who about 11 years ago signed over to the American Ceramic Society the rights to publish a second edition of the book. This second edition is divided into four parts. In the introductory section, it states : “The appearance of a ceramic is determined by its internal structure, which is in turn determined by the technology of its manufacture. Revolutionary new methods of study and analysis have advanced out understanding of ceramics. This book applies these new methods, connecting visual impact, internal structure, and technology for a deeper appreciation of ceramic masterpieces.” Each chapter outlines the transformative art and structure of a ceramic material by providing a general outline of history, artistic value, antecedent technologies, manufacture of the particular dated example, analysis of macrostructure, then microstructure, then composition, then firing, variability and its relation to appearance, and finally significance of technology and its contribution to art and culture. In the ceramic technology section, the sequences and variability of processing, exemplified in the case studies, is inventoried with emphasis on structure and transformation.

The Masterpiece follows an ambitious set of paintbrushes as they set out to create a grand work of art. But will their goals be derailed when some of the paintbrushes display unusual behavior, or will they all learn how to work together, no matter what? Join a spunky collection of paintbrushes as they set out to create a grand masterpiece. When some of the brushes don't cooperate, is it because they are misbehaving...or is there another reason entirely? In this story, an initiative of REED Foundation for Autism, young readers are introduced to some of the behavioral differences in their peers with autism. Without ever mentioning any particular challenge or disability by name, this story helps children recognize and understand what autism is, and impress upon them the importance of showing kindness to those who are different, wrapped into a fun story with lighthearted, engaging characters.
