Articulate Images was first published in 1983. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Twenty-five years ago, Jean Hagstrum published a pioneering study, The Sister Arts, showing how the visual arts influenced the imagination of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English poets. Hagstrum's book suggested the intimate (and sometimes troubled) relationship between poetry and painting, and, more than any other on the subject, provided a basis for subsequent development and refinement within this field of comparative studies. The nine original essays in Articulate Images address the central issues Hagstrum raised; they serve as an introduction to current approaches to the sister arts. Fully illustrated, Articulate Images will be enjoyed by readers entering the field as well as by seasoned votaries of the sister arts.

This collection of case studies investigates the significance and function of national identity. The authors see national consciousness in terms of the circumstances in which it arose, and in terms of the meaning which it had for a specific group or individual. Representations of the nation could serve to legitimize or support specific political or social agendas, or to provide people with a point of fixity amidst changing circumstances. The articles in this volume trace these aspects of national consciousness in the case of a single country: The Netherlands.

In the domain of visual images, those of fine art form a tiny minority. This original and brilliant book calls upon art historians to look beyond their traditional subjects—painting, drawing, photography, and printmaking—to the vast array of "nonart" images, including those from science, technology, commerce, medicine, music, and archaeology. Such images, James Elkins asserts, can be as rich and expressive as any canonical painting. Using scores of illustrations as examples, he proposes a radically new way of thinking about visual analysis, one that relies on an object's own internal sense of organization.Elkins begins by demonstrating the arbitrariness of current criteria used by art historians for selecting images for study. He urges scholars to adopt, instead, the far broader criteria of the young field of image studies. After analyzing the philosophic underpinnings of this interdisciplinary field, he surveys the entire range of images, from calligraphy to mathematical graphs and abstract painting. Throughout, Elkins blends philosophic analysis with historical detail to produce a startling new sense of such basic terms as pictures, writing, and notation.

Transmission Image: Visual Translation and Cultural Agency offers a challenging survey of the burgeoning debate about visual culture in a global perspective. Bringing together scholarly perspectives on places ranging from China and India to Nigeria, and from the Philippines and Syria to Germany, this volume proposes a truly global outlook on the study of visual culture in both a contemporary and an historical perspective. Addressing key theoretical issues, the contributors cover a wide range of art forms and visual media, highlighting the complex cultural codification of images and its impact on the study of visual culture and globalization.
