Paper Is Essential For National Security. It Is Of Substantial Importance For The Economic Prosperity Of The Country. A Variety Of Paper And Paper Products Are Produced In India. Economic Growth Is Accompanied By The Increasing Need For Paper And Paper Products. It Is More So In The Case Of A Developing Economy Like India, Which Has Been Striving For Rapid Industrialization, Blended With The Objectives Of Liberalization And Globalization. Regarding Paper And Paperboard, Two Facts Appear To Be Special For Indian Economy. Firstly, Per Capita Paper Consumption In India Has Been One Of The Lowest In The World. Secondly, Domestic Production Is Not Sufficient To Meet The Growing Consumption Needs Of The Economy. Though Paper Industry Continues To Progress Under Successive Five Year Plans, Imports Of Paper And Paperboard Continue To Be A Regular Feature Of The Indian Economy, As India Is Not Self- Sufficient In Respect Of Paper And Paperboard, Particularly In Speciality Papers. The Present Book Analyses The Magnitude And Determinants Of Paper And Paper Products Import Of India And Ways And Means To Make The Industry Internationally Competitive.

Few aspects of the history of modern empires are of such significance as their economics and politics. These factors are inextricably linked in many analyses, have generated extensive historiographical debate and are currently the subject of some of the freshest and liveliest scholarship. The articles and chapters which are brought together in this volume relate not only to the European colonial empires, but also to the Napoleonic, Russian and Japanese empires. The collection is strongly comparative in approach with the articles arranged into thematic sections on: the place of politics and economics in the rise and fall of modern empires; the causal relationship between modern empires and colonial, global, and metropolitan economic transformations; and the ’technologies of rule’ which provided the frameworks through which colonial economies were managed, and rights defined. The collection reflects new approaches, as well as the continuing importance of issues addressed in an older historiography, and the thematic arrangement produces useful juxtapositions of older and newer literatures. The substantial introduction explores the themes and identifies key historiographical trends in relation to each.

This book provides a macroeconomic analysis of the Indian economy. It is a long-run study that spans the period from 1950-51 to 1992-93, encompassing the various turning points in India's economic policy and development strategies. The macroeconometric model used in the book integrates the monetary and real sectors of the economy. In order to provide theoretical underpinnings for the model, the book traces the development of macroeconomic theory including Keynesian, structuralist, and supply-side economics. The model explains the public sector's current and capital expenditures, rather than treating them as exogenous variables. A subrecursive system of prices is formulated in terms of unit cost based on the flow of factor income generated in the process of production, monetary variable, and agriculture supply factors. The model analyzes and evaluates policy changes in India, particularly since 1984. It is used to derive the appropriate mix of fiscal, monetary, and trade policies needed to generate significant economic growth in 1997-2000 in a non-inflationary environment. While fiscal and monetary discipline is vital in this regard, public-sector investment plays an important role in capital formation and economic growth.
