Towards a New Social Contract Ars Electronica 2023 is dedicated to the complex questions of truth and the concept of ownership in this digital age. In doing so, the festival navigates the central questions of our time. The focus is on how our perception of "authentic" and "original" is being transformed and whether truth can be owned, and how this relates to digitalization and the rapidly developing performance of artificial intelligence. How can the achievements of a tool that is so much based on the globally collective "raw material" of knowledge and creativity be made accessible to everyone and be harnessed to the benefit of all? This comprehensive volume brings together the works of artists, scientists, developers, designers, entrepreneurs and activists from around the world and delves deep into the themes of the festival, offering insights, perspectives, and thought-provoking content that reflect on the intersection of art, technology, and society.

This book of 21 chapters shares endeavors associated to the human trait of creative expression within, across, and between digital media in wide-ranging contexts making the contents perfect as a course study book uptake within related educations. Globally located chapter authors share their comprehensive artisan perspectives from works associated with regional cultures, diversities of interpretations, and widespread scopes of meanings. Contents illustrate contemporary works reflecting thought-provoking comprehensions, functions, and purposes, posit as contributing toward shifting of boundaries within the field. What happened to the 1960s ideas of machine art, cybernetic art, »algorithmic revolution«, and the hopes for a democratization of the art market? How do contemporary art practitioners cope with the political situation and with the attempts of the Silicon Valley giants to appropriate algorithmic generation of art-like artefacts? This issue aims to discuss how the early concept of computer art is now being reframed as digital, post-digital or algorithmic art under the prevailing conditions of big data, smart AI, an almost all-encompassing surveillance technology and the political state of neo-liberalism.

The award-winning works from a lively year in media art Since 1987, the Prix Ars Electronica has been one of the most prestigious prizes in media art. The jury includes experts in the fields of Computer/Film/VFX, Digital Music, Sound Art, Artificial Intelligence and Life Art.

The symposium Expanded Animation was initiated in 2013 and offered a first approach to the expanded field of computer animation. In the meantime, it has become an established part of the Ars Electronica Animation Festival and the international competition Prix Ars Electronica Computer Animation. Every year under an overarching theme, the symposium has researched the field of technology and art, animation and aesthetics, investigated the collapsing boundaries in digital animation and explored positions and future trends. Much like the first conferences on computer animation at Ars Electronica in the 1980s, practice and theory are equally important. The richly illustrated publication Expanded Animation. The Anthology features contributions from speakers and artist positions from the past five years and presents an overview of the prize winners in Computer Animation.

Documenting the 42nd iteration of the festival, in hybrid format For only the second time in its 40 years, the Ars Electronica Festival migrated to a hybrid format for its annual proceedings. The theme of this festival was: "how can artistic and scientific research make connections between technology, art and society visible?"
