This book presents a simple and systematic description of EM design of antenna arrays. Printed dipole antennas are known to be simple yet more efficient than wire antennas. The dielectric substrate and the presence of ground plane affect the antenna performance and the resonant frequency is shifted. This book includes the EM design and performance analysis of printed dipole arrays on planar and cylindrical substrates. The antenna element is taken as half-wave centre-fed dipole. The substrate is taken as low-loss dielectric. The effect of substrate material, ground plane, and the curvature effect is discussed. Results are presented for both the linear and planar dipole arrays. The performance of dipole array is analyzed in terms of input impedance, return loss, and radiation pattern for different configurations. The effect of curved platform (substrate and ground plane) on the radiation behaviour of dipole array is analyzed. The book explains fundamentals of EM design and analysis of dipole antenna array through numerous illustrations. It is essentially a step-to-step guide for beginners in the field of antenna array design and engineering.

In this book, first published in 1968, King and his co-authors develop a theory of the behaviour of arrays of rod-shaped antennas such as are used to achieve directive transmission and reception of radio waves for use in communication between points on the earth, between the earth and a space vehicle, or in radio astronomy. They use quantitative analysis of arrays of practical types and wide range of lengths over a wide frequency band, which makes possible the design of new arrays with desired characteristics. After the introductory chapter reviewing the foundations and conventions antenna theory, each subsequent chapter takes into account the authors own particular theories on isolated antennas, two-coupled antennas, N-element circular array, N-element curtain array of identical elements, to arrays containing elements of different lengths and finally to planar and three-dimensional arrays. The final chapter is concerned with problems of measurement and the correlation of theory with experiment.

The circular arrays investigated consist of N identical center-fed cylindrical dipoles which lie in the plane of a circle and whose centers are equally spaced around the circumference of the circle. In the case designated 'tangential arrays' the elements are placed tangential to the circle and in the case designated 'radial arrays' they are placed radial to the circle. This study first presents the derivation of the integral equations defining the vector potential over the surfaces of the elements. These equations are reduced to a single integral equation by using sequence terminal voltages. The Gaussian quadrature formula for numerical integration is used to solve the equation for each sequence. Methods of obtaining the sequence terminal admittances are also described. Experimental results are compared with theory for a driven monopole in a tangential array positioned on a ground-plane. Radiation patterns determined from the numerical currents are compared with those obtained from assumed sinusoidal currents. (Author).

Approximate formulas are derived for the current and charge distributions on cylindrical dipole antennas. These formulas are distinguished from derivations of some other authors by being better representations, particularly near the ends and driving point of the dipole, and by being valid over a larger range of electrical lengths. The latter distinction is important in the study of single dipoles operated over a fairly broad band of frequencies, or in the normal operation of an array of dipoles of widely varying lengths. A typical array of this kind is the log-periodic dipole antanna. Sample calculations and graphs of current, charge, and admittance are provided for the purpose of comparing the new representations with the earlier derivations and with experimental results.
