Sumner County, like many of the counties of Tennessee, finds itself ever-expanding, growing from a predominantly agricultural community once marked by expansive horse farms, a colorful patchwork of sharecroppers' fields, and extravagant antebellum homes into a county full of modern-day luxuries and conveniences. Over the past 100 years, curvy, dusty farm roads eventually evolved into paved highways and interstates, and "mom and pop" stores gave way to supermarkets and expansive malls. Around Gallatin and Sumner County Volume II continues to explore and celebrate the Sumner County of yesteryear. In this volume, readers will enjoy strolling through old neighborhoods, meeting local celebrities such as "Tippy" Crutcher, Fred Astair's stand-in, holding their breath as they marvel at Crash Brown's stunt drivers, busting up illegal moonshine stills on the outskirts of town, walking through the doors of the growing industries, and gazing at grand buildings torn down in the name of progress. Through these fascinating images and their stories, this book shares a more personal side of Gallatin and Sumner County that cannot always be found in history books--a side that celebrates the everyday lives and activities of its citizens.

On February 23, 1863, Pres. Abraham Lincoln signed the bill creating the Territory of Arizona. The first Arizona Territorial Legislature established the capital at Prescott and met in September 1864. They divided the territory into four counties: Mohave, Pima, Yavapai, and Yuma. Yavapai County, the "mother county," consisted of approximately 65,000 square miles and was believed to be the largest county in the United States. By the time Arizona attained statehood on February 14, 1912, there were 14 counties, and Yavapai County had been reduced in size to 8,125 square miles. Yavapai County has a rich history in mining, ranching, farming, military, and business. Today, Yavapai County is a thriving, growing county with nine incorporated cities and towns and numerous unincorporated communities, such as Ash Fork, Black Canyon City, Cornville, Mayer, and Skull Valley. Historic sites include Sharlot Hall Museum in Prescott, the town of Jerome, Fort Verde, Montezuma's Castle and Well, and Tuzigoot.

Situated in the very heart of Pennsylvania, Blair County is bounded on the west by the formidable Allegheny Mountains. It was this natural barrier that stalled westward migration and encouraged early settlers to farm its lush, fertile valleys prior to the American Revolution. Carved out of Bedford and Huntingdon Counties in 1846, Blair County was home to many iron furnaces in the 1800s and was on the chosen path of the great Pennsylvania Canal. However, it was the Pennsylvania Railroad that utilized Blair County as its base of operations, thus creating a unique transportation-based economy. Today, Blair County is bisected by Interstate 99. This highway, which parallels a great Native American path, provides travelers with views of some of the loftiest mountains and the most picturesque scenery of the state.

The Kentucky Encyclopedia's 2,000-plus entries are the work of more than five hundred writers. Their subjects reflect all areas of the commonwealth and span the time from prehistoric settlement to today's headlines, recording Kentuckians' achievements in art, architecture, business, education, politics, religion, science, and sports. Biographical sketches portray all of Kentucky's governors and U.S. senators, as well as note congressmen and state and local politicians. Kentucky's impact on the national scene is registered in the lives of such figures as Carry Nation, Henry Clay, Louis Brandeis, and Alben Barkley. The commonwealth's high range from writers Harriette Arnow and Jesse Stuart, reformers Laura Clay and Mary Breckinridge, and civil rights leaders Whitney Young, Jr., and Georgia Powers, to sports figures Muhammad Ali and Adolph Rupp and entertainers Loretta Lynn, Merle Travis, and the Everly Brothers. Entries describe each county and county seat and each community with a population above 2,500. Broad overview articles examine such topics as agriculture, segregation, transportation, literature, and folklife. Frequently misunderstood aspects of Kentucky's history and culture are clarified and popular misconceptions corrected. The facts on such subjects as mint juleps, Fort Knox, Boone's coonskin cap, the Kentucky hot brown, and Morgan's Raiders will settle many an argument. For both the researcher and the more casual reader, this collection of facts and fancies about Kentucky and Kentuckians will be an invaluable resource.
