Excerpt from Armageddon and After Trolled by soldiers and diplomatists. Of course there is Obvious truth in the assertion that the immediate settlement of peace conditions must, to a large extent, be left in the hands of those who brought the war to a successful con elusion. But the relief from pressing anxiety when this horrible strife is over, and the feeling of gratitude to those who have delivered us must not be allowed to gild and consecrate, as it were, systems proved effete and policies which intelligent men recognise as bankrupt. The moment Of deliverance will be too unique and too splendid to be left in the hands of men who have grown, if not cynical, at all events a little weary Of the notorious defects of humanity, and who. Are, perhaps naturally, tempted to allow European progress to fall back into the Old well-worn ruts. It is the young men who must take the matter in hand, with their ardent hopes and their keen imagina tion, and only so far as they believe in the possibility Of a great amelioration will they have any chance of doing yeoman service for humanity. Excerpt from Armageddon: The World War in Literature Were voices and thunders and lightnings, and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great. And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. Excerpt from Who Is Responsible?: Armageddon and After This little book attempts to trace out how Prussian tradition, starting with Frederick the Great, has succeeded in corrupting the Germany of to-day. At the same time, due credit is given to the collateral policy of increasing the nation's efficiency, even if the final product has been a type of organization that approximates to the orderly servitude of the beehive. The author has attempted an analysis of the character of the Kaiser. William's love of the spectacular is emphasized, and he is described as the Nero in vanity, if not in cruelty, of the twentieth century. The workings of the Mailed Fist are next discussed, and the final results of his twenty-five years of forcible-feeble diplomacy are summed up as having left Germany without a friend in the world and as having reconciled with one another many nations who hitherto had not been on friendly terms. Excerpt from Armageddon A_ poem without a publisher is like a boat without the water. Each may have graceful lines, and be paint ed in pleasing colors, but they refuse to carry their build er to the haven where he would be; and the sea of liter ature is much like the briny deep, for on both are calms and storms, reefs and bars, and many books as well as boats find their haven at the first ebbing tide. All of my literary boats are on land, except a few, and they are fast in the mud; those few were launched about a year ago, but they had unskillful pilots, tattered sails, and before they left the little bay by which I dwell the wind died out, so they drifted on the quicksands of that estuary called oblivion. Excerpt from Armageddon a Tale of Love, War, and Invention In the first years of the present century-the nations were in turmoil. The nineteenth century had flickered out in something liker racial warfare, and, while there had been an adjustment, while there was nominal peace throughout the hemispheres, there was an undercurrent of fear, and mighty preparations were making among the nations which were dominant. The whole world was afoot and girding itself for threatening war. The wonder was, not so much that such a condition should exist as that there should have been maintained so long even a sort of semi-equilibrium in international relations. When the Spanish-American war ended all points of contact between the nations were inflamed. Something must happen. Excerpt from Before Armageddon The writer desires first of all to bear personal testimony to the faithfulness of the Great Revealer of truth. Some four years of my life and ministry were spent in the British Isles. A part of this time was passed in Newport, Wales, where an extended series of Sunday night addresses were delivered on the prophecies of Daniel and the Revelation. Up to this time the 17th of Revelation was an unsolved enigma. My traditional teaching on this subject, like all others I had read, was utterly unsatisfactory and easily overthrown. Knowing that the addresses would eventually reach this difficult chapter, and that the hearers, who were permitted to ask questions freely, could easily overthrow any teaching on the subject with which I was familiar, I appealed to the Lord definitely for light on this important prophecy. Day after day I went to my room and laying the Bible open at the 17th of Revelation, knelt and read the chapter to the Lord and asked earnestly for light. Again and again was the promise pleaded "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him." Jas. 1:5. Not only in secret but at the family altar, the Lord was constantly petitioned to open up the mysteries of the prophecy. The matter became the principal theme of the household, among whom were some who were sharing the public labors. For three months persistent prayer was offered in private and with the family, sometimes amid tears, that God would open up these things to our understanding. One evening, with the prayer still unanswered, the writer started to walk for exercise to the historic village of Caerleon and return, before speaking at night.
