The Handbook of Artificial Intelligence, Volume II focuses on the improvements in artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing applications, including programming languages, intelligent CAI systems, and the employment of AI in medicine, science, and education. Implementation of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe Recommendation No. R (2000) 13 on a European policy on access to archives Recommendation No. R (2000) 13 on a European policy on access to archives was adopted by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on 13 July 2000 on the basis that archives constitute an essential and irreplaceable element of culture. The recommendation was the first international standard in this field and it formulated several principles with a view to inspiring sound policies in the member states on access to archives, through legislation or by bringing existing legislation into line with the recommendation. Following the adoption of the recommendation, a pan-European survey on European states’ compliance with the recommendation was initiated. The results of the survey were published by the Council of Europe in 2005, Access to archives – A handbook of guidelines for implementation of Rec No. R (2000) 13 on a European policy on access to archives. Two decades later, a new study has explored and evaluated the situation regarding access to archives in Council of Europe member states. This publication summarises the most important results of a Europe-wide survey on the situation of access to archives in general and on the implementation of Recommendation No. R (2000) 13 in particular. It highlights current and future challenges arising from digitisation and changing user expectations, thus providing background knowledge for civil servants and decision makers, archive authorities and archivists, the scientific community and civil society organisations.

Archival technology and its depictions in science fiction have developed dramatically since the 1950s. Ray Bradbury discusses archives in terms of books and television media, and Margaret Atwood in terms of magazines and journaling. William Gibson focused on technofuturistic cyberspace and brain-to-computer prosthetics, Bruce Sterling on genetics and society as an archive of social practices. Neal Stephenson has imagined post-cyberpunk matrix space and interactive primers. As the archive is altered, so are the humans that interact with ever-advancing technology.

Archival Science in Interdisciplinary Theory and Practice brings together scholars, practicing archivists, and records managers to discuss key issues in the conceptual and theoretical frameworks of the profession. The contributors examine the state of archival studies as a discipline and practice, placing it within an international, interdisciplinary, forward-looking context. Topics include: the identity of archival science as a discipline, the authenticity and trustworthiness of archives in various forms, archival practice around the world, and new directions for archives in the 21st century. Many of these topics were originally articulated or strongly influenced by Luciana Duranti’s international and interdisciplinary InterPARES projects (1998-2026). The book’s themes (theoretical concepts about trustworthiness of records, interdisciplinary research, archival education, and the archival profession) are particularly relevant in today’s environment when governments and institutions are questioning the trustworthiness of records and attempting to combat disinformation. The book will fill a unique niche by presenting scholarship, practice, and pedagogy influenced by Duranti.
