Wireless has quickly become an irreplaceable medium for communication, but by their very nature, wireless transmissions are vulnerable to RF interference from various sources. This weakness is a growing problem for technologies that operate in unlicensed frequency bands, as these bands are becoming more crowded over time. The increasing density of radios, coupled with the growing number of different protocols, dictates that future wireless devices will require the ability to coexist and operate in a crowded and often unregulated electromagnetic environment. This dissertation presents a set of architectures and mechanisms for wireless coexistence. These mechanisms are intended as general primitives, enabling future wireless networks to be architected such that they are aware of who their RF neighbors are, what they are doing, and how to respond to them. We design and develop two systems, each demonstrating how changes at different levels across the network stack can provide significant gains. Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) is a robust and accurate technique to detect activity in any band of the relevant spectrum, while Picasso is an extensible radio design which allows the device to more easily exploit the fragmented bands which are available. This dissertation contributes to advancing the state of the art in wireless network design in multiple ways. First, the systems in this dissertation present novel algorithms that span signal processing, circuit design, and software systems. Not only do these algorithms enrich existing theory, they are designed with practical implementations in mind - helping to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Second, we present prototype implementations and testbed evaluations of our systems. Our results demonstrate that our systems deliver significantly improved performance in crowded interferencecentric environments, compared to the state-of-the-art. Finally, the work in this dissertation demonstrates that by having layers work cooperatively, rather than in isolation, common goals of high throughput and reliability in dense interference scenarios are much more practical to achieve. In particular, DOF demonstrates that more fine-grained information passed between the PHY and the MAC enables the MAC to make more informed and intelligent decisions regarding how to respond to the varying sources of interference. In the same vain, Picasso demonstrates that increased RF isolation can significantly lessen the burden on PHY filtering and MAC coordination - similarly allowing the three to share in the task of exploiting fragmented spectrum. We believe that the systems in this dissertation make a compelling and strong argument for cross-layer interdisciplinary wireless network design in order to solve the problems of wireless coexistence.

This book introduces readers to the fundamentals of the cross-technology coexistence problem in heterogeneous wireless networks. It also highlights a range of mechanisms designed to combat this problem and improve network performance, including protocol design, theoretical analysis, and experimental evaluation. In turn, the book proposes three mechanisms that can be combined to combat the cross-technology coexistence problem and improve network performance. First, the authors present a fast signal identification method. It provides the basis for the subsequent protocol design and allows heterogeneous devices to adopt proper transmission strategies. Second, the authors present two cross-technology interference management mechanisms in both the time domain and the frequency domain, which can mitigate interference and increase transmission opportunities for heterogeneous devices, thus improving network performance. Third, they present a cross-technology communication mechanism based on symbol-level energy modulation, which allows heterogeneous devices to transmit information directly without a gateway, improving transmission efficiency and paving the way for new applications in IoT scenarios. Lastly, they outline several potential research directions to further improve the efficiency of cross-technology coexistence. This book is intended for researchers, computer scientists, and engineers who are interested in the research areas of wireless networking, wireless communication, mobile computing, and Internet of Things. Wireless networks, because of the potential pervasive and mobile communication services they offer, are becoming the dominant Internet access networks. However, the legacy Internet protocols, still dominant at that time, have not been designed with mobility and wireless in mind. Therefore, numerous maladjustments and “defaults of impedance” can be observed when combining wireless physical and MAC layers with the traditional upper layers. This thesis proposes several solutions for a pacific coexistence between these communication layers that have been defined and designed independently. Reliable mobility management and Low layer performance enhancements are two main challenging issues in the context of wireless networks. Mobility management (which is mostly based on mobile IP architecture nowadays) aims to continuously assign and control the wireless connections of mobile nodes amongst a space of wireless access networks. Low layer performance enhancements mainly focus on the transmission efficiency such as higher rate, lower loss, interference avoidance. This thesis addresses these two important issues from an original and innovative approach that, conversely to the traditional contributions, entails a minimum impact on the legacy protocols and internet infrastructure. Following the “end to end” and “cross layer” paradigms, we address and offer efficient and light solutions to fast handover, location management and continuous connection support through a space of wireless networks. Moreover, we show that such an approach makes it possible to enhance transmission efficiency and solve efficiently several syndromes that plague the performances of current wireless networks such as performance anomaly, unfairness issues and maladjustment between MAC layer and upper layers. This thesis tackles these issues by combining analytical models, simulations and real experiments. The resulting mechanisms have been developed and integrated into adaptive mobility management communication architecture that delivers high performing communication services to mobile wireless systems, with a focus on WIFI and WIMAX access networks.
