L'ordinateur, instrument de calcul et de traitement de l'information digital électronique, est né au sortir de la deuxième guerre mondiale dans un laboratoire universitaire américain qui travaillait pour le compte des forces armées de ce pays. Peu sûrs matériellement, très grands consommateurs d'énergie électrique, accessibles et utilisables seulement par des personnels hyper qualifiés et triés sur le volet, les premiers systèmes informatiques ainsi que leurs logiciels furent pour l'essentiel conçus afin de répondre aux besoins spécifiques des militaires. Ils occupaient des dizaines de mètres carrés au sol, pesaient des tonnes tandis que leur coût, lui, atteignait en général plusieurs centaines de milliers de dollars. Quant à leur puissance de calcul, elle n'était rien moins que dérisoire comparée à celle dont tout un chacun peut disposer à ce jour. En l'espace d'une soixantaine d'années à peine, l'ordinateur a pourtant littéralement conquis les sociétés humaines en les transformant si radicalement et si profondément qu'il est aujourd'hui couramment admis de parler de révolution numérique. D'un coût dérisoire, ultra miniaturisé, polymorphe, surpuissant, mis en réseau à l'échelon planétaire, on le retrouve maintenant absolument partout, dans tous les aspects de l'existence humaine. Il est devenu à ce point si essentiel, si coextensif à nous-mêmes, à notre temps et à notre économie que paradoxalement, on a fini par ne plus guère y prêter attention. Après avoir questionné sa provenance, son essence logico-mathématique nous montrons comment l'ordinateur, ce fils prodigue engendré et perfectionné en temps de guerre par la puissante triangulaire armée-université-industrie et pensé à l'origine comme un analogue artificiel du cerveau humain, n'a cessé de subir de spectaculaires métamorphoses qualitatives et performatives tout en induisant rétroactivement des transformations remarquables sur les institutions, les groupes et les individus composant la société. Au travers de cette archéologie de l'informatique il s'agit ici de tenter de mieux comprendre la machine univers, son histoire et sa science, dans l'espoir d'être en mesure de mieux appréhender l'Homme et le monde dans lequel il vit d'aujourd'hui

This volume brings together a selection of papers proposed for the Proceedings of the 42nd Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology conference (CAA), hosted at Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University from 22nd to 25th April 2014.

Traditional methods of making archaeological data available are becoming increasingly inadequate. Thanks to improved techniques for examining data from multiple viewpoints, archaeologists are now in a position to record different kinds of data, and to explore that data more fully than ever before. The growing availablility of computer networks and other technologies means that communication should become increasingly available to international archaeologists. Will this result in the democratisation of archaeological knowledge on a global basis?
