The ancient Greek world consisted of approximately 1,000 autonomous polities scattered across the Mediterranean basin, and each one developed its own, unique set of socio-political institutions and social practices. The Oxford History of the Archaic Greek World offers twenty-one detailed studies of key sites from across the Greek world between c. 750 and c. 480 BCE--a crucial period when much of what is now seen as distinctive about Greek culture emerged. Edward Quibell [1867-1935] directed the excavations on the town mound at Hierakonpolis from 1897 to 1898. The temple area yielded spectacular objects of the Old Kingdom, including life-size copper statues of two Sixth Dynasty kings and a golden hawk head. Most significant for early dynastic studies was the discovery of the so-called ¿Main Deposit¿, a hoard of early votive objects including the famous scorpion and maceheads. These provided the earliest images of Egyptian Kings. Quibell catalogued and published these findings in Archaic Objects, printed in two volumes in 1904-1905. Die Beiträge des Tagungsbandes analysieren aus archäologischer und historischer Sicht die strukturellen Veränderungsprozesse, die sich während der archaisch-klassischen Zeit in den kretischen Bürgerstaaten vollzogen.
