The Nordic welfare states are facing new challenges in an increasingly globalised world. Fiercer competition has underlined the need for the Nordics to enhance competitiveness - and to support and nurse growth in industry and businesses. This report presents the key findings and policy recommendations of the project "Nordic Growth Sectors." Based on the analyses and on a Nordic Policy Forum held in Copenhagen with participation of policymakers from the central administrations, labour market organisations, universities and growth companies, a set of policy recommendations are developed, the most important of which are to Introduce: (i) More flexible retirement schemes; (ii) Diminish international recruitment red tape; (iii) Prepare graduates better for employment; (iv) Create national work environment "barometers"; (v) Introduce more flexible child care facilities; (vi) Carry out cost-benefit analysis of complex regulation

Greenland and the International Politics of a Changing Arctic examines the international politics of semi-independent Greenland in a changing and increasingly globalised Arctic. Without sovereign statehood, but with increased geopolitical importance, independent foreign policy ambitions, and a solidified self-image as a trailblazer for Arctic indigenous peoples’ rights, Greenland is making its mark on the Arctic and is in turn affected – and empowered – by Arctic developments. The chapters in this collection analyse how a distinct Greenlandic foreign policy identity shapes political ends and means, how relations to its parent state of Denmark is both a burden and a resource, and how Greenlandic actors use and influence regional institutional settings as well as foreign states and commercial actors to produce an increasingly independent – if not sovereign – entity with aims and ambitions for regional change in the Arctic. This is the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary examination of Greenland’s international relations and how they are connected to wider Arctic politics. It will be essential reading for students and scholars interested in Arctic governance and security, international relations, sovereignty, geopolitics, paradiplomacy, indigenous affairs and anyone concerned with the political future of the Arctic.

Challenging the orthodox view that European integration is eroding national identity, this groundbreaking volume links identity, citizenship and democratic legitimacy in a unique way by focusing on key themes: ¢ the suggestion that the EMU project is much more than an economic enterprise: it will invade national sovereignty and destroy cherished national symbols. ¢ relating assertive regional and ethnic identities to evolving concepts of EU citizenship and a European identity. ¢ the danger the whole European project may be in if a genuine EU-level citizenship is not created. The role of frontiers in the integration process is ambiguous and double-edged. Frontier zones once had a life of their own and, ironically, integration emphasizes frontiers in a new way. Written by authors of different nationalities and disciplines, this timely volume is accessible for readers from many backgrounds, and will lead them to a clearer understanding of the metamorphosing ’New Europe’.

This title was first published in 2001: For over 30 years it has been argued that contemporary society is undergoing a fundamental transformation. The portrait of the modern society or modernity offered by philosophers and social scientists from Hobbes to Parsons is no longer understood as a description of the final and highest stage in the social evolution of mankind. Modern society is not the end of history but simply another more or less contingent social and cultural formation on planet earth. This new perspective on modernity and its transformation, which has emerged from the modernist-postmodernist debate, is the subject matter of this book. It is addressed in a multidisciplinary and international way, both theoretically and empirically, and is explored not only in general and historical terms, but also through specific topics such as sexuality, identity, democracy, globalization, knowledge and leadership. Offering an important collaborative contribution to contemporary discourse in sociology, social psychology, politics and philosophy, this book represents a unique effort to come to grips with our obscure and elusive social position at the start of the 21st century.
