Excerpt from The Evolution of Antiseptic Surgery: An Historical Sketch of the Use of Antiseptics From the Earliest Times For many years I have been engaged in researches respecting the early methods employed in the healing arts, amongst both civilised and uncivilised peoples. It has been my object, in particular, to trace the origin of the use of remedial agents. Why were certain sub stances used in the treatment of various diseases? Was their adoption the result of study and practical observa tion, or was it more usually the result of accident? Were the alleged virtues purely imaginary and due to some superstitious suggestion? A consideration of such ques tions is always of interest, and sometimes adds to our knowledge. There is a considerable amount of information scattered throughout the world in folk-lore, early manuscripts and printed. Books, but the difficulties of tracing out and sifting the evidence are considerable. I anticipate that the Historical Exhibition of medical, chemical and pharmaceutical objects which I am organising, to be held in London (eng), will lead to the revealing of many facts, and the elucidation of many obscure points, in connection with the origins of various medicines. I should greatly value any information sent me in regard to medical traditions or references to antient treatment in manuscripts, printed works, etc.; even though the items be ever so small, they may form important connecting links in the chain of historical evidence. Excerpt from A Handbook on Antiseptics The main object of this handbook is to give a concise account of the chief chemical antiseptics which have been found useful for surgical purposes during the present war. Some of the publications on this subject are not readily accessible to many who Wish to inform themselves as to cur rent European practice, and the requisite information has not yet, so far as we know, been collected into a form handy for reference. It appeared, therefore, that the present work might prove of use to surgeons and others in this country who are now taking up military duties connected with the care of the wounded. Excerpt from Antiseptic Surgery: Its Principles, Practice, History, and Results The drawings in this book (both the woodcuts and the plates) have been made by Mr. Edgar Thurston, to whom I am much indebted for the great pains which he has bestowed in their preparation. Mr. Groves also kindly took some photographs, from which certain of the woodcuts have been drawn. Dr. Heron has ren dered me great assistance in revising the proof-sheets and in preparing the Index.
