In the absence of the President, the chair was occupied by Rev. David Root, of Guilford, Connecticut. Professor Whipple read the following selections from the Scriptures: So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that arc done under the sun; and behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. Eccl.4: 1.Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and boldest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more ria;hteous than he? and makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creepuig things that have no ruler over them? Hab. 1: 13, 14.Woe . to the oppressing city. Her princes within her are roaring lions: her judges are evening wolves: they gnaw not the bones until the morrow. Her prophets are light and treacherous persons; her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law. The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will do no iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, hefaileth not: but the unjust knoweth no shame. Zeph.3:1-5.He hath said in his heart, (iJod hath forgotten; he hideth his face; he will never see it. Arise, 0 Lord; 0 God, lift up thine hand; forget not the humble. Thus saith the Lord; ye have not hearkened unto me, in proclaiming liberty, every one to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, 1 proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine.
