Excerpt from Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Board of Health of the State of Rhode Island, for the Year Ending December 31, 1893: And Including the Report Upon the Registration of Birth, Marriages and Deaths in 1891 Obviously, a report in print of the State Board of Health for any year, can only be an outline of the proceedings of the Board; whether in its various sessions convened, or of the work accomplished by various methods and agencies, to which it has given direction and supervision. The general plan of procedure during the year 1892, did not differ materially from that pursued in the preceding years, and was steadily followed with the sincere purpose of furthering increased protection to human life and the better promotion of the public health. Of the methods employed, there may be mentioned in part, the dissemination of sanitary literature, which, by equitable distribution in proportion to population reached every community in the State; the distribution of documents relating to communicable diseases and means of prevention; by sanitary investigations of premises where sickness from contagious and infectious diseases was prevalent; by investigations as to the causes of epidemic or endemic diseases attended with unusual mortality, and in regard to the circumstances and conditions of suspected sources of specific or of general ill-health;also in regard to actual and possible sources of pollution of water supplies, of sources and conditions of waters for public use, and wholly or in part for potable or domestic water, especially in hotels, boarding houses, shore resorts, and compact villages, and of all waters designed for larger public supplies; the drainage of public buildings and of houses, for family use and for public accommodation, as to waste waters from sinks, laundries, and water closets; and of the various methods of the disposal of sewage; the holding of conferences and of correspondence in large numbers of instances, regarding sanitary questions relating to school-rooms, workshops, stores, villages, public and other premises, and in other ways too many to describe.
