Excerpt from Annual Report of the Director of the Mint for the Fiscal Year Ended June 30, 1943: Including Report on the Production of the Precious Metals During the Calendar Year 1942 Domestic coin manufactured during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1943, amounted to pieces, as compared with the record production of pieces during the preceding year. As in previous years, the coin most largely produced was the 1-cent piece. The production in 1943, in amount con sisted of subsidiary silver coins, 5-cent coins, and 1 - cent pieces, of which pieces were bronze and were of zinc-coated steel. Coinage for foreign governments amounted to pieces, compared with pieces during the prior year. The grand total of domestic and foreign coins made in 1943 amounted to pieces, a decrease of over the prior year. The decrease was largely due to interrupted pro duction resulting from changes in the alloy of minor coins.
