¡Anda! Curso elemental, 1/e is the first Elementary Spanish book conceptualized from the outset to meet the needs of today's language teachers and learners. In the last few years, classroom contact hours have been reduced drastically, class sizes have increased and students' lives have become busier than ever. Instructors don't have time to cover everything that they feel is needed and more is being asked of them with fewer resources. At the same time, language teachers want to spend as much time exposing students to Hispanic culture and practicing communication as they do with grammar. But, there simply isn't enough time or resources. The result: Many instructors end up galloping through their elementary Spanish text, omitting interesting cultural lessons, to try to give students the broadest grammatical exposure possible. Now they have a new option: ¡Anda! This Books á la Carte Edition is an unbound, three-hole punched version of the textbook and provides students the opportunity to personalize their book by incorporating their own notes and taking only the portion of the book they need to class — all at an affordable price.

When we walk, we have time to talk. The natural human pace is walking. We can run or sprint, but not for long. Eventually, we are exhausted and have to stop. But we can walk almost endlessly. It is actually amazing how far we can go when we walk, ultimately much farther than when we run. The ¡Anda! program was designed to give students more opportunities to pause and take a breath to take in all that makes up the exciting Spanish-speaking world. ¡Anda!'s streamlined approach to grammar and vocabulary helps instructors slow the pace of Elementary and Intermediate Spanish, giving students time to put language to use. So if you're tired of dashing through Elementary and Intermediate Spanish without giving students a chance to practice what they're learning, walk with ¡Anda! Also available with MyLab Spanish MyLabTM is the teaching and learning platform that empowers you to reach every student. Many students have trouble the first time they take a mathematics course in which proofs play a significant role. This new edition of Velleman's successful text will prepare students to make the transition from solving problems to proving theorems by teaching them the techniques needed to read and write proofs. The book begins with the basic concepts of logic and set theory, to familiarize students with the language of mathematics and how it is interpreted. These concepts are used as the basis for a step-by-step breakdown of the most important techniques used in constructing proofs. The author shows how complex proofs are built up from these smaller steps, using detailed 'scratch work' sections to expose the machinery of proofs about the natural numbers, relations, functions, and infinite sets. To give students the opportunity to construct their own proofs, this new edition contains over 200 new exercises, selected solutions, and an introduction to Proof Designer software. No background beyond standard high school mathematics is assumed. This book will be useful to anyone interested in logic and proofs: computer scientists, philosophers, linguists, and of course mathematicians.

It helps students develop the skills to distinguish between productive and unproductive public discourse; participate in and lead constructive discussions of community issues; and analyze public messages as an act of civic participation. By integrating the theme of civic engagement throughout, Public Speaking and Democratic Participation offers a direct and inspiring response to the alarming decline in civic participation in the U.S. and the climate of vindictiveness in our current political culture. It equips students with the tools to reverse these tendencies and move toward a greater commitment to our shared public life.

Magicians, necromancers and astrologers are assiduous characters in the European golden age theatre. This book deals with dramatic characters who act as physiognomists or palm readers in the fictional world and analyses the fictionalisation of physiognomic lore as a practice of divination in early modern Romance theatre from Pietro Aretino and Giordano Bruno to Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca and Thomas Corneille.

This intriguing study of Mexico's participation in world's fairs from 1889 to 1929 explores Mexico's self-presentation at these fairs as a reflection of the country's drive toward nationalization and a modernized image. Mauricio Tenorio-Trillo contrasts Mexico's presence at the 1889 Paris fair—where its display was the largest and most expensive Mexico has ever mounted—with Mexico's presence after the 1910 Mexican Revolution at fairs in Rio de Janeiro in 1922 and Seville in 1929. Rather than seeing the revolution as a sharp break, Tenorio-Trillo points to important continuities between the pre- and post-revolution periods. He also discusses how, internationally, the character of world's fairs was radically transformed during this time, from the Eiffel Tower prototype, encapsulating a wondrous symbolic universe, to the Disneyland model of commodified entertainment. Drawing on cultural, intellectual, urban, literary, social, and art histories, Tenorio-Trillo's thorough and imaginative study presents a broad cultural history of Mexico from 1880 to 1930, set within the context of the origins of Western nationalism, cosmopolitanism, and modernism.
