Excerpt from Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene: A Text-Book for Schools, Academies, Colleges 1. All bodies, or masses of matter, on the earth may be separated into two classes; the organized and the unorganized. The organized bodies comprise all animals and all vegetables; the unorganized bodies comprise the air, gases, water, soils, ores, stones, and rocks. Excerpt from A Text-Book on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, for the Use of Schools and Colleges Although the chief object has been to prepare a text-book for academic students, the work is also designed for the use of schools and families; and students of medicine will find that it contains a few hints of value to them, especially in Lecture XXVII., which has been added for their benefit. The division of Hygiene will be found to present many facts of interest to the general reader; and, in view of the measured but apparently inevitable approach of cholera to our shores, we have in the last lecture given a short summary of the means by which we may hope to, avoid its attack. Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Excerpt from First Book on Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene, for Grammar Schools and Families: With Eighty-Three Engravings To the teacher we would suggest the propriety of calling on a pupil of the class, to describe the anatomy of an organ from an anatomical outline plate; after wards call upon another to give the physiology of the part, while a third may state the hygiene; after which, the questions at the bottom of the page may be asked promiscuously, and thus the detailed know ledge which each pupil possesses of the subject will be tested. Excerpt from Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene: With Special Reference to the Effects of Stimulants and Narcotics, for Use in Primary and Intermediate Schools This allegory is unfortunately true, and few people who are born into the world live past middle life, and such are apt to be less strong and well than in youth. Very many die when they are little children of diseases or accidents which are the trap-doors Of the vision. Others are pushed through, which means that they are killed in battle or starved by the greediness of others, or that they are led by their companions on the dangerous trap-door of drink, which every year Opens for more people to drop through than are killed in all the bat tles all over the world. The bubbles which many chase are riches and pleasure. But if one has not health to enjoy them they are of no value. In Olden times people were always seeking for the Elixir of Life, which would make them live forever. They never found it. But today wise men realize that the nearest thing to the Elixir is knowledge - knowledge Of how to make our bodies large and strong, how to prevent sickness, and how to live as long as possible.
