________________ 'Absorbing... his gift for dialogue is exceptional' - The Observer ________________ First published in 1983, An Orderly Man is volume three of Dirk Bogarde's best-selling memoirs. After completing work on Visconti's Death in Venice, the celebrated actor seeks a refuge from 20 years of 'continual motion'. This dream of a peaceful retreat materialises itself in the form of a neglected farmhouse in the South of France. However, before he is rewarded with the calm he craves, he is forced to endure the relative evils of dying olive trees and the rampaging mistral. In this pursuit of the tranquil, Bogarde manages to portray the simplest of issues in the most delicate and humane way. This volume also covers the years in which Dirk Bogarde gave some of his finest acting performances and began his career as a gifted writer, imposing order on a rich and varied life.

The award-winning history of 12 million German-speaking civilians in Europe who were driven from their homes after WWII: “a major achievement” (New Republic). Immediately after the Second World War, the victorious Allies authorized the forced relocation of ethnic Germans from their homes across central and southern Europe to Germany. The numbers were almost unimaginable: between 12 and 14 million civilians, most of them women and children. And the losses were horrifying: at least five hundred thousand people, and perhaps many more, died while detained in former concentration camps, locked in trains, or after arriving in Germany malnourished, and homeless. In this authoritative and objective account, historian R.M. Douglas examines an aspect of European history that few have wished to confront, exploring how the forced migrations were conceived, planned, and executed, and how their legacy reverberates throughout central Europe today. The first comprehensive history of this immense manmade catastrophe, Orderly and Humane is an important study of the largest recorded episode of what we now call "ethnic cleansing." It may also be the most significant untold story of the World War II.

An extraordinary account of life behind the locked doors of a secure psychiatric ward from a nurse who worked there for seven years. Dennis O'Donnell started work as an orderly in the Intensive Psychiatric Care Unit of a large hospital in Scotland in 2000. In his daily life he encountered fear, violence and despair but also a considerable amount of care and compassion. Recounting the stories of the patients he worked with, and those of his colleagues on the ward, here he examines major mental health conditions, methods of treatment - medication, how religion, sex, wealth, health and drugs can bear influence on mental health, the prevailing attitudes to psychiatric illness, the authorities, the professionals & society. What emerges is a document of humanity and humour, a remarkable memoir that sheds light on a world that still remains largely unknown. 'This is a superb study of people whose minds have gone wrong, and the art of caring for them' Evening Standard

I wrote this book in my darkest time and realized that I must use my experiences to teach people many ways to enjoy both sides of life. I believe that there is no such thing as a good time or bad time in life. Rather, I see opportunities for creative invention, regeneration, growth, circumcision of heart, and thinking about the past and the future. I wrote this book to answer some of the world's most commonly asked questions, which always cross my mind. I propose many sources of the problems we have in the world, as well as solutions for how to handle them. Do the politicians really have the solution to our economic problems? Can the world ever experience peace and harmony? Has religion done us more harm than good? Is there really a God? If there is one, where can we find him/her? I think that, after reading this book, most of your questions will be answered. Human beings forget that there are two sides to everything: the good and the bad, the sun and the moon, night and day, light and darkness. Unfortunately, we choose to see only the good sides of existence as being beneficial and refuse to embrace and see the opportunities that can come from the hard times. We may be so busy seeing the faults of other people and not our own; could that be one of the reasons we seem to misunderstand each other? I hope to impart my wisdom to you. Do not worry about death, but consider how to be prepared when it comes. Additionally, you must acknowledge God and his sovereignty, and not only by attending church or Mosque. This book also teaches about parenting, attitudes, character and many other things about life.

"Dirk Bogarde (1921-1999) was known principally as the star of more than sixty films and a critically acclaimed author. To a privileged few, however, he was a prolific, stimulating and treasured correspondent." "This selection of his letters opens as he and his companion Anthony Forwood start a new life on the Continent, from where Bogarde writes extensively to - among others - the director Joseph Losey, the critic Dilys Powell, the publisher Norah Smallwood, and the authors Penelope Mortimer and Kathleen Tynan. In more than one case, we have an insight into 'a kind of love affair without the carnality' - the description he gave to his epistolary relationship with the American 'Mrs X', which was the basis of his eighth bestseller, A Particular Friendship (1989)." "Collected here, his letters represent an alternative autobiography, covering three decades. On display are the qualities familiar to those who knew the private Bogarde: acute observation, a laser-like intelligence, an easily-provoked waspishness, an aversion to the politically correct, a directness which could wound and offend, a robust compassion for the needy, a relish for the striking metaphor, and a catastrophic disdain for correct spelling and punctuation. As clouds gather over the Provencal idyll, forcing a return to London, his confidences grow more and more poignant. But the incisive humour survives."--BOOK JACKET.
