The land, once the birth-place of liberty, heroism, philosophy, poetry and eloquence, is now pressed by the foot-step of the slave or the tyrant. Ignorance has erected her altar on the spot, where genius and learning once had their seats, and the city, that gave laws to the world, has been the prey of savage conquests, and at length the fountain of the most degrading superstitions.
