Excerpt from American Principles: A Review of Works of Fisher Ames An American1mmt had even talked ofthe impressment ofibrittsh'subjetts from American merchant vessels, as being agreeable to a Riou'g claimed and ex ercised for ages, and had undertaken to justify the 'britsh king's proclamation of October 16, 1807, under the pretence that it was merely an assertion of the nation's right to the service of its subjects in time of war. The ordersin coun cil too had been defended, as merel y retaliatory upon France, and although some straining had been manifested at the name of mbm, yet it'was found that the same thing might be swallowed with perfect ease under the name of 'a tram! Excerpt from The Principles of American Diplomacy The present work incorporates substantially the entire text, with few alterations or amendments, of the volume published by the author in 1905 under the title American Diplomacy: Its Spirit and Achievements. The narrative in that volume, however, embraces few incidents that occurred later than 1903. The years that have since elapsed have been marked by important events, some of which are destined to be highly influential in shaping the future course of the foreign policy of the United States. The present work brings the history of that policy down to date. The object of the author in the preparation of the original work, as well as in its revision, has been to set forth and explain the fundamental principles by which the diplomacy of the United States has been governed. Domestic policy and foreign policy are seldom wholly diverse, and foreign policy is in the main profoundly influenced by local interests and ideals. Consequently, just as the internal development of each nation presents some distinctive phase or phases, so we may expect its foreign policy to bear distinctive marks by which it can be identified. Excerpt from American Education: Its Principles and Elements, Dedicated to the Teachers of the United States Brief and imperfect as my reflections on this momentous subject are, I send them out as a well-meant, if not a valuable, offering to the teachers of the United States. They may, perhaps, aid some persons in contemplating those higher and nobler principles which lie beyond the details of books and the modes of instruction - in fine, those principles which concern universal and direct the tiny of the soul. These principles and objects har monizs in spirit and in Substance with the American platform adopted by aconvention of the American party, last June, in Philadelphia.
