In 1943, while the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals were winning pennants and meeting in that year's World Series, Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, and Johnny Sain practiced on a skinned-out college field in the heart of North Carolina. They and other past and future stars formed one of the greatest baseball teams of all time. They were among a cadre of fighter-pilot cadets who wore the Cloudbuster Nine baseball jersey at an elite Navy training school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a child, Anne Keene's father, Jim Raugh, suited up as the team batboy and mascot. He got to know his baseball heroes personally, watching players hit the road on cramped, tin-can buses, dazzling factory workers, kids, and service members at dozens of games, including a war-bond exhibition with Babe Ruth at Yankee Stadium. Jimmy followed his baseball dreams as a college All-American but was crushed later in life by a failed major-league bid with the Detroit Tigers. He would have carried this story to his grave had Anne not discovered his scrapbook from a Navy school that shaped America's greatest heroes including George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford, John Glenn, and Paul "Bear" Bryant. With the help of rare images and insights from World War II baseball veterans such as Dr. Bobby Brown and Eddie Robinson, the story of this remarkable team is brought to life for the first time in The Cloudbuster Nine: The Untold Story of Ted Williams and the Baseball Team That Helped Win World War II.

Who was the best baseball team of all time? This timeless question can most effectively be answered through comprehensive analysis of baseball statistics. Over the course of a season, winning teams tend to score more runs while allowing fewer than their opponents. The greater the difference in runs per game, the more a team can be expected to win. Comparing this data for the top five percent of Major League nines from 1901 through 2014, this book argues that runs above league average is the best statistic for ranking teams. The author sorts 220 teams by era, franchise and skills--hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching--evaluates their strengths and weaknesses and assigns numerical values to each player's skills to demonstrate how they contributed to team performance.

Human society, as we know it, goes back some 200,000 years to a time when we learned to speak and communicate our thoughts. The Nine Pillars of History are defined from nine basic requirements for a healthy and prosperous society during the following 190,000 years of Hunting and Gathering. Sexuality, a fundamental human need that goes even further back in history than society, had to be mitigated with a social rule: The Golden Rule. The Nine Pillars of History are used as non-political common denominators to judge the political evolution of some thirty major countries or cultures. In addition, the Pillars are partnered with the Golden Rule to explore five world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The relevance of The Nine Pillars of History is proven by the fact that they exist intergraded across multiple societies since the dawn of time and are still relevant for our modern world. This historical review reveals that dogmatic religions and harsh politics have caused 10,000 years of war by challenging the relevance of The Nine Pillars of History. Dr. Sevelius gives his views as nonpolitical, nonreligious thoughts. Each paragraph has been numbered to offer an easy to use reference system for community discussion of specific statements. The Nine Pillars of History gives you, Dear Friend and Reader, a vision for peace. As Dr. Sevelius respectfully borrows President Lincolns enduring truth, that governments of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth.

Sister Ursula, a Los Angeles nun who makes a habit of sleuthing, tackles a locked room murder in this “delightful . . . original” mystery classic (The New York Times Book Review). Anthony Boucher was a literary renaissance man: an Edgar Award–winning mystery reviewer, an esteemed editor of the Hugo Award–winning Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, a prolific scriptwriter of radio mystery programs, and an accomplished writer of mystery, science fiction, fantasy, and horror. With a particular fondness for the locked room mystery, Boucher created such iconic sleuths as Los Angeles PI Fergus O’Breen, amateur sleuth Sister Ursula, and alcoholic ex-cop Nick Noble. The guilty better say their prayers when Sister Ursula is on the case—in this acclaimed mystery novel, which remains “as expert as a fencer’s skill and as fresh as a daisy” (The New York Times Book Review). The head of the Children of Light, cloaked in his yellow robe, has placed the ancient curse of the Nine Times Nine upon Wolfe Harrigan, the famed author and debunker of cults, who naturally scoffs. The next day, Wolfe’s assistant, Matt Duncan, sees something in the window of Wolfe’s study that throws him into a panic: a man in a yellow robe. When Wolfe is found alone and dead inside the study, the police are stumped. All the windows were locked, and Wolfe’s sister, who was sitting right outside the door, claims she saw no one come out. The baffling case doesn’t add up for family friend Sister Ursula. But she’ll need a miracle if she hopes to divine the truth before the killer strikes again . . .
