With the increasing areal density in magnetic recording systems, perpendicular recording has replaced longitudinal recording to overcome the superparamagnetic limit. Studies on perpendicular recording channels including aspects of channel modeling, signal processing and coding techniques are presented in this dissertation. To optimize a high density perpendicular magnetic recording system, one needs to know the tradeoffs between various components of the system including the read/write transducers, the magnetic medium, and the read channel. We extend the work by Chaichanavong on the parameter optimization for systems via design curves. Different signal processing and coding techniques are studied. Information-theoretic tools are utilized to determine the acceptable region for the channel parameters when optimal detection and linear coding techniques are used. Our results show that a considerable gain can be achieved by the optimal detection and coding techniques. The read-write process in perpendicular magnetic recording channels includes a number of nonlinear effects. Nonlinear transition shift (NLTS) is one of them. The signal distortion induced by NLTS can be reduced by write precompensation during data recording. We numerically evaluate the effect of NLTS on the read-back signal and examine the effectiveness of several write precompensation schemes in combating NLTS in a channel characterized by both transition jitter noise and additive white Gaussian electronics noise. We also present an analytical method to estimate the bit-error-rate and use it to help determine the optimal write precompensation values in multi-level precompensation schemes. We propose a mean-adjusted pattern-dependent noise predictive (PDNP) detection algorithm for use on the channel with NLTS. We show that this detector can offer significant improvements in bit-error-rate (BER) compared to conventional Viterbi and PDNP detectors. Moreover, the system performance can be further improved by combining the new detector with a simple write precompensation scheme. Soft-decision decoding for algebraic codes can improve performance for magnetic recording systems. In this dissertation, we propose two soft-decision decoding methods for tensor-product parity codes. We also present a list decoding algorithm for generalized error locating codes.

The third volume of the influential WWRF Book of Visions of research and trends in mobile communications has been fully updated. It includes three new chapters on flexible spectrum use, ultra-broadband convergent home-area networks, and the system concept. Visions from manufacturers, network operators, research institutes and academia from all over world are captured by the WWRF in one comprehensive single point of reference. Technologies for the Wireless Future, Volume 3 describes the expectations and requirements of a user in the ‘future wireless world’ between 2010 and 2017. This will enable readers to prioritise research topics based on the provision of cost-effective solutions. This book is ideal for researchers from both academia and industry, as well as engineers, managers, strategists, and regulators. WWRF has become highly influential on the future of wireless communication. You can see the evidence already, as many of the concepts described in the very first Book of Vision have been adopted in today’s wireless implementations. The organization brings together the long-range views of academia with the practical constraints and requirements of industry. This is a powerful combination. Mark Pecen, Vice President, Research In Motion Limited The WWRF Book of Vision series of books are an invaluable source of information for key thoughts and technology developments in wireless and mobile communication. The comprehensiveness and diversified nature of its research reports and results can prove to be a very useful tool in planning and developing the next generation network and services. Bill Huang, General Manager, China Mobile Research As mobile broadband becomes part of our daily lives, in the same way that mobile telephony has done, and helps us to support important issues such as health care, education and many other priorities, WWRF is again exploring the options for mobile and wireless systems in its' third edition of the Book of Visions. Earlier versions have helped to reach global consensus on research objectives, reduce investment risk and generate critical mass in research efforts. The third book of visions provides key insights into the international academic and commercial discussion on tomorrows' hot topics in mobile research! Comprehensive introduction to non-binary error-correction coding techniques Non-Binary Error Control Coding for Wireless Communication and Data Storage explores non-binary coding schemes that have been developed to provide an alternative to the Reed – Solomon codes, which are expected to become unsuitable for use in future data storage and communication devices as the demand for higher data rates increases. This book will look at the other significant non-binary coding schemes, including non-binary block and ring trellis-coded modulation (TCM) codes that perform well in fading conditions without any expansion in bandwidth use, and algebraic-geometric codes which are an extension of Reed-Solomon codes but with better parameters. Key Features: Comprehensive and self-contained reference to non-binary error control coding starting from binary codes and progressing up to the latest non-binary codes Explains the design and construction of good non-binary codes with descriptions of efficient non-binary decoding algorithms with applications for wireless communication and high-density data storage Discusses the application to specific cellular and wireless channels, and also magnetic storage channels that model the reading of data from the magnetic disc of a hard drive. Includes detailed worked examples for each coding scheme to supplement the concepts described in this book Focuses on the encoding, decoding and performance of both block and convolutional non-binary codes, and covers the Kötter-Vardy algorithm and Non-binary LDPC codes This book will be an excellent reference for researchers in the wireless communication and data storage communities, as well as development/research engineers in telecoms and storage companies. Postgraduate students in these fields will also find this book of interest.
