The Food Consumption Survey provided the detail on farm food purchases, by individual items, for one week in the spring of 1955. This, plus expenditures for tobacco, was the basis for the entries in the first three columns of the table. 'for food items, they represent 52 times the value of a week's con sumption of purchased food. This is based on food purchases in the spring of the year, a season when some home-produced food is available for use.
