I am impressed. Wire's method, a close scrutiny of Paul's rhetoric to reconstruct the audience of the letter, is intriguing and fruitful. A careful analysis of the rhetoric of Paul's argument has enabled Wire to reconstruct the theological understanding of the Corinthian Christian women and to show how Paul's loss of social status in becoming a Christian affected his theology and how their gain in status influenced theirs. An important book for feminist biblical scholarship, for our understanding of early Christianity, and for our understanding of how social status and theology may interrelate. Chloe and Her People offers an Africana Womanist reading of First Corinthians that privileges the knowledge, experiences, histories, traditions, voices, and artifacts of Black women and the Black community that challenge or dissent from Paul's rhetorical epistemic constructions. Smith reads First Corinthians dialogically from the perspective of oppressed and marginalized readers situated in front of the text and those muted within and behind the letter. Struggling toward unmitigated freedom, Chloe and Her People talks back to and throws shade on, sometimes poetically, Paul's muting and subordination of women, rhetorically constructed binary knowledge, the glass ceiling placed on women's heads, heterosexual marriage as a mechanism for managing lust, and androcentric patriarchal love built on women's passive bodies.

Looking at Paul’s writing through a feminist lens, this volume asks questions focused around science and philosophy. Antoinette Clark Wire specifically explores the reality of all bodies and beings in the ecosystem, not excluding whatever these beings produce, including the speed of light, the webs of spiders, and the culture of humans, so the broadest focus includes the specific. This focus could be too broad for Paul’s letters, blind as he seems to be about where food comes from, why families nurture children, or how water sustains life. Yet Wire shows the reader how he grapples again and again with the limits of his body and the threat of death and finds in Jesus’s dying and rising a way out of fear toward what he calls ‘a new creation.’
