Domestic violence accounts for approximately one-fifth of all violent crime in the United States and is among the most difficult issues confronting professionals in the legal and criminal justice systems. In this volume, Elizabeth Britt argues that learning embodied advocacy—a practice that results from an expanded understanding of expertise based on lived experience—and adopting it in legal settings can directly and tangibly help victims of abuse. Focusing on clinical legal education at the Domestic Violence Institute at the Northeastern University School of Law, Britt takes a case-study approach to illuminate how challenging the context, aims, and forms of advocacy traditionally embraced in the U.S. legal system produces better support for victims of domestic violence. She analyzes a wide range of materials and practices, including the pedagogy of law school training programs, interviews with advocates, and narratives written by students in the emergency department, and looks closely at the forms of rhetorical education through which students assimilate advocacy practices. By examining how students learn to listen actively to clients and to recognize that clients have the right and ability to make decisions for themselves, Britt shows that rhetorical education can succeed in producing legal professionals with the inclination and capacity to engage others whose values and experiences diverge from their own. By investigating the deep relationship between legal education and rhetorical education, Reimagining Advocacy calls for conversations and action that will improve advocacy for others, especially for victims of domestic violence seeking assistance from legal professionals.

Proverbs 31:8 challenges God's people to 'Open your mouth for those with no voice, for the cause of all the dispossessed' (ESV). In Unmuted, Usha Reifsnider makes use of 'muted group theory' to help church leaders and theologians understand the real challenges of identity, intersectionality, and the myriad ways of being human in God's world. Drawing together powerful testimonies from disciples of Jesus from around the world, Usha Reifsnider brings theological reflection and biblical insight to the contested question of multifaceted identities. As a convert from a Hindu background and, married to an American, she is well placed to do so. Unmuted ends with a powerful statement about the future of evangelicalism - in a clarion cry to the West to listen again to the voices of global church and join in with what God is doing.

On July 16, 1945, just weeks before the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that brought about the surrender of Japan and the end of World War II, the United States unleashed the world's first atomic bomb at the Trinity testing site located in the remote Tularosa Valley in south-central New Mexico. Immensely more powerful than any weapon the world had seen, the bomb's effects on the surrounding and downwind communities of plants, animals, birds, and humans have lasted decades. In The First Atomic Bomb Janet Farrell Brodie explores the history of the Trinity test and those whose contributions have rarely, if ever, been discussed--the men and women who constructed, served, and witnessed the first test--as well as the downwinders who suffered the consequences of the radiation. Concentrating on these ordinary people, laborers, ranchers, and Indigenous peoples who lived in the region and participated in the testing, Brodie corrects the lack of coverage in existing scholarship on the essential details and everyday experiences of this globally significant event. The First Atomic Bomb also covers the environmental preservation of the Trinity test site and compares it with the wide range of atomic sites now preserved independently or as part of the new Manhattan Project National Historical Park. Although the Trinity site became a significant node for testing the new weapons of the postwar United States, it is known today as an officially designated National Historic Landmark. Brodie presents a timely, important, and innovative study of an explosion that carries special historical weight in American memory.

Seeking to expand the transformative aspect of conflict resolution, the contributors to this edited collection have focused on gathering scholarship from under-represented voices and viewpoints in the field, the emerging discipline. Most mainstream conflict resolution seems to look either at interpersonal conflict or international conflict without much focus on the differing individuals and social structures involved. These peer-reviewed essays add significant findings to those gaps in the literature. The editors and contributors are, perhaps not coincidentally, mostly women and people of color, whose voices are often absent from other collections. Praise for the new edition: "This revised text should be read by all practitioners in health and social care settings who supports people with complex needs and who aim to promote anti-oppressive and person-centred practice. A variety of activities is presented in each chapter to stimulate readers to reflect on the cases and concepts under discussion. This text represents a valuable companion for professionals involved in learning disability practice." Learning Disability Practice "This new edition proves to be a substantial updating of the 1995 edition. The coverage is analytical and clearly related to anti-oppressive practice. It is important to persuade students of the necessity of action to put their values into practice - this book is a real boon and should be required reading up and down the country." Mark Baldwin, University of Bath. In the new edition of this bestselling text, the authors challenge the notion that anti-oppressive practice has lost its potency or become commodified into a professional response to inequalities. Retaining a commitment to the principles and values of anti-oppressive practice, discussion about contemporary practice is guided by a critical understanding of personal values and the context of practice. Some key questions are explored: How is anti-oppressive practice relevant in contemporary practice? How can the law be used as an empowering tool? How can the law be used to develop and inform anti-oppressive practice? The second edition is substantially revised and updated to take account of policy and legislative changes, with a new chapter addressing critical practice in social work as well as additional activities, chapter summaries and further reading at the end of each chapter. The authors draw on their own experiences and those of practitioners, service users and carers to understand issues of power and oppression, demonstrating how the law can be used to inform the development of critical anti-oppressive practice. The book therefore points the way to practice that is both empowering to service users and ultimately liberating for practitioners. Anti-Oppressive Practice is an essential text for students, practitioners, lecturers, service users and carers.
