Adventures of Button Broken Tail. Book II Failure is a bitter pill for anyone, particularly so for the very young as Buttons experienced it in Mommy Kitty, Book I.Now groomed and self-assured, Buttons faces an unforgiving foe and finds failure awaiting the moment she crosses the line into the Dog Show ring with the final leg of her obedience championship waiting, but not to be hers. But failure will not be allowed by her many friends even as she sulks and bewails her failure for they have other plans which means work, more work, frustration upon frustration and utter fatigue as each training session ends. Read how the The Dog Show comes to a crashing and near disastrous finale as Buttons must one again meet the Judge with her boy at her side in center ring. Buttons' unpredicable and very needle sharp teeth prove more than the vicious Hunter can handle when he, his dull witted partner, and three experienced and murderous hounds begin to attack Ssserek who has finally been cornered in a heavily thicketed portion of the forest. In The Great Storm Button goes from muddy to muddier as Sara once again appears to save what she can of the forest/ Nonetheless, it is an ignoble ending for our irrepressible heroin. The stink raised by the actions of the trapper, a killer of many innocent animals, is brought to its conclusion through the actions of Buttons and Sally with the help of numerous small creatures and the wisdom of Mother Coyote. Her son, Three toed Tolly, survives his inquistiveness, and youthful brashness. Mother Coyote holds her tongue as Scottie and Beagle aid the trapper despite his terrible behavior. Only time has the answer. Delph finally meets his nemesis and wreaks havoc on the Sideshow Man's belongings, freeing many helpless creatures in the meantime. If there is sadness, there is also joy which ends in Elmer the Saint Bernard's swimming pool where a harsh and cruel day is finally brought under control in the cool waters and early evening of a long day. In Straw, a lonely stand of corn evokes a Shakespearean-like setting in which Buttons and Sally joush one another before leaving for dinner and ending this brief interlude with a joke within a joke. A new and beautiful world opens for Ssserek when his winter's hibernation is rudely interrupted by a cocky and busy Buttons who is abetted by a neighborly but inept and not too bright but always effervescent Springer spaniel. Imagine if you will awkening to a world which you have never seen or experienced. Inherent dangers lurk with Ssserek's own body as his mind is busily absorbing all that lies before him. The goodwill of Buttons is dangerous, but in her rush to please has she endangered her greatest friend? Poik...poikil..ah nuts. Read and find out.

A provocative story of class struggle, privilege, and poverty that put American author Jean Stafford on the map. Growing up in a fishing village north of Boston between the wars, Sonie, the child of immigrants, is so poor that she must “sleep on a pallet made of old coats and comforters.” She can only dream of the feather beds and perfumed soap to be found in the great city across the bay. In the summers, while helping her mother clean rooms in a shoreside hotel, she keeps company with the austere and fascinating Miss Pride. Years pass, and Sonie—now the caretaker of her fragile mother—receives an invitation from Miss Pride to move to Beacon Hill and be her personal secretary. Salvation, she thinks, is at hand. In Boston, Sonie does come to know a new and broader world, one in which she mingles with both blue bloods and louche European refugees, and yet her troubles, she discovers, are hardly over. Boston Adventure was published when Jean Stafford was twenty-nine, and it was an immediate best seller. Combining Dickensian color and Proustian insight in its depiction of an isolated but determined young woman, it looks forward to Stafford’s celebrated novel The Mountain Lion as well as to the short stories for which she would be awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1970.
