How much freshwater is there on Earth? Can science help us use water more efficiently? The 'Why Science Matters' series demonstrates how the science we learn at school is important in every aspect of our everyday lives. Using case studies and investigations, the series describes the development of science and technologies that can improve our lives - or lead to new scientific challenges and controversies. In 'Managing and Using Water', we find out about the most vital resource on Earth and how it shapes our landscape. We learn the importance of water as a solvent, how the power of flowing water can be harnessed to provide us with energy, how drinking water is cleaned and sewage treated, and new technologies to combat water shortages around the world.

During the past five decades, we have witnessed a tremendous evolution in water resource system management. Three characteristics of this evolution are of particular note: First, the application of the systems approach to complex water management problems has been established as one of the most important advances in the field of water resource management. Second, the past five decades have brought a remarkable transformation of attitude in the water resource management community towards environmental concerns and action to address these concerns. Third, applying the principles of sustainability to water resource decision-making requires major changes in the objectives on which decisions are based, and an understanding of the complicated inter-relationships between existing ecological, economic, and social factors. The Special Issue includes 15 contributions that offer insights into contemporary problems, approaches, and issues related to the management of complex water resources systems. It will be presumptuous to say that these 15 contributions characterize the success or failure of the systems approach to support water resources decision-making. However, these contributions offer interesting lessons from current experiences and highlight possible future work.

Water Must Flow Uphill Adventures in University Administration Roger Makanjuola This is a riveting story of triumph against great odds and tragedies in the ivory tower. The author, once the Chief Medical Director of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex and the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife has told a gripping story in his compelling memoirs. The style and honesty in which it is told makes it a revelatory and poignant read. The story is set against a determination to succeed. Spanning a period of about 15 years, the book gives an incisive insight into the challenges of managing tertiary institutions in Nigeria, most of which are still relevant today. It is an account of enormous energy, sincere and creative efforts, unalloyed commitment and love. They say every person has a book in him. This is mine. The book covers a major part of my working life; the period when I was the Chief Executive of the Teaching Hospital at Ile-Ife, Nigeria, and then the period when I was the Vice-Chancellor of the University in the same town. The Book includes many harrowing tales as well as happier times. However, this is essentially an account of the love I have for Great Ife, the hospital as well as the University. It is a love story; a tale of true love -Roger Makanjuola (Author) Roger Makanjuola is a Professor of Psychiatry. He was the Chief Medical Director of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria from 1989 to 1997 and Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University from 1999 to 2006.
