The papers collected in the book were invited by the editors as tutorial courses or keynote speeches for the Fourth International Conference on Software Engineering and Knowledge Engineering. It was the editors' intention that this book should offer a wide coverage of the main topics involved with the specifications, prototyping, development and maintenance of software systems and knowledge-based systems. The main issues in the area of software engineering and knowledge engineering are addressed and for each analyzed topic the corresponding of state research is reported.

As future generation information technology (FGIT) becomes specialized and fr- mented, it is easy to lose sight that many topics in FGIT have common threads and, because of this, advances in one discipline may be transmitted to others. Presentation of recent results obtained in different disciplines encourages this interchange for the advancement of FGIT as a whole. Of particular interest are hybrid solutions that c- bine ideas taken from multiple disciplines in order to achieve something more signi- cant than the sum of the individual parts. Through such hybrid philosophy, a new principle can be discovered, which has the propensity to propagate throughout mul- faceted disciplines. FGIT 2009 was the first mega-conference that attempted to follow the above idea of hybridization in FGIT in a form of multiple events related to particular disciplines of IT, conducted by separate scientific committees, but coordinated in order to expose the most important contributions. It included the following international conferences: Advanced Software Engineering and Its Applications (ASEA), Bio-Science and Bio- Technology (BSBT), Control and Automation (CA), Database Theory and Appli- tion (DTA), Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity (DRBC; published indepe- ently), Future Generation Communication and Networking (FGCN) that was c- bined with Advanced Communication and Networking (ACN), Grid and Distributed Computing (GDC), Multimedia, Computer Graphics and Broadcasting (MulGraB), Security Technology (SecTech), Signal Processing, Image Processing and Pattern Recognition (SIP), and u- and e-Service, Science and Technology (UNESST).

Software Engineering describes the conceptual bases as well as the main methods and rules on computer programming. This book presents software engineering as a coherent and logically built synthesis and makes it possible to properly carry out an application of small or medium difficulty that can later be developed and adapted to more complex cases. This text is comprised of six chapters and begins by introducing the reader to the fundamental notions of entities, actions, and programming. The next two chapters elaborate on the concepts of information and consistency domains and show that a processor can take into account only imperative, occasionally adverbial, statements written in an artificial language. The third chapter explains how to define the general characteristics of actions so that they may be expressed using an artificial language conceived by an interlocutor of Indo-European idiom. The fourth chapter looks at general and technical criteria, and the fifth chapter deals with all the fundamental structures of entities. The final chapter considers a rational method of determining the actions. This book is a valuable resource for software designers and students taking computer courses.

This volume provides an overview of current work in software engineering techniques that can enhance the quality of software. The chapters of this volume, organized by key topic area, create an agenda for the IFIP Working Conference on Software Engineering Techniques, SET 2006. The seven sections of the volume address the following areas: software architectures, modeling, project management, software quality, analysis and verification methods, data management, and software maintenance.

On behalf of the Organizing Committee for this event, we are glad to welcome you to IWASE 2006, the First International Workshop on Advanced Software Engineering. We hope you will enjoy the traditional Chilean hospitality and, of course, please tell us how we can make your visit a pleasant and useful experience. The goal of this Workshop is to create a new forum for researchers, professionals and educators to discuss advanced software engineering topics. A distinctive feature of this Workshop is its attempt to foster interactions between the Latin-American software engineering community and computer scientists around the world. This is an opportunity to discuss with other researchers or simply to meet new colleagues. IWASE 2006 has been organized to facilitate strong interactions among those attending it and to offer ample time for discussing each paper. IWASE 2006 attracted 28 submissions from 14 countries, 8 of them outside Latin-America. Each of the 28 articles was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. As a result of this rigorous reviewing process, 13 papers were accepted: nine fiill papers and four work-in-progress papers. These papers were grouped in four tracks; software architecture, software modeling, software development process and experiences in software development.
