This volume contains selected and invited papers presented at the International Conference on Computing and Information, ICCI '90, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, May 23-26, 1990. ICCI conferences provide an international forum for presenting new results in research, development and applications in computing and information. Their primary goal is to promote an interchange of ideas and cooperation between practitioners and theorists in the interdisciplinary fields of computing, communication and information theory. The four main topic areas of ICCI '90 are: - Information and coding theory, statistics and probability, - Foundations of computer science, theory of algorithms and programming, - Concurrency, parallelism, communications, networking, computer architecture and VLSI, - Data and software engineering, databases, expert systems, information systems, decision making, and AI methodologies.

This volume contains papers presented at the Third International Conference on Computing and Information, ICCI '91, held at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, May 27-29, 1991. The conference was organized by the School of Computer Science at Carleton University, and was sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Carleton University. ICCI '91 was an international forum for the presentation of original results in research, development, and applications in computing and information processing. The conference was aimed at both practitioners and theoreticians, and was organized into five streams: - Algorithms and complexity, - Databases and information systems, - Parallel processing and systems, - Distributed computing and systems, - Expert systems, artificial intelligence. This volume contains three invited papers, by E.C.R. Hehner, R.L. Probert, and S.J. Smith, and 71 selected papers.

The innovative progress in the development oflarge-and small-scale parallel computing systems and their increasing availability have caused a sharp rise in interest in the scientific principles that underlie parallel computation and parallel programming. The biannual "Parallel Architectures and Languages Europe" (PARLE) conferences aim at presenting current research material on all aspects of the theory, design, and application of parallel computing systems and parallel processing. At the same time, the goal of the PARLE conferences is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to ex change ideas on recent developments and trends in the field of parallel com puting and parallel programming. The first ~wo conferences, PARLE '87 and PARLE '89, have succeeded in meeting this goal and made PARLE a conference that is recognized worldwide in the field of parallel computation. PARLE '91 again offers a wealth of high-quality research material for the benefit of the scientific community. Compared to its predecessors, the scope of PARLE '91 has been broadened so as to cover the area of parallel algo rithms and complexity, in addition to the central themes of parallel archi tectures and languages. The proceedings of the PARLE '91 conference contain the text of all con tributed papers that were selected for the programme and of the invited papers by leading experts in the field.

Attribute grammars have shown themselves to be a useful formalism for specifying the syntax and the static semantics of programming languages. They are also useful for implementing syntax-directed editors, compilers, translator writing systems and compiler generators, and any application that has a strong syntactic base. However, no textbooks are available that cover the entire field. To redress this imbalance, anInternational Summer School on Attribute Grammars, Applications and Systems was held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in June 1991. The course aimed at teaching the state of the art in attribute grammars, and their relation to other language specification methods. This volume presents the proceedings of the school. The papers are well suited for self-study, and a selection of them can be used for introductory courses in attribute grammars.

The main idea behind the series of volumes Advances in Petri Nets is to present to the general computer science community recent results which are the most representative and significant for the development of the area. Thepapers for the volumes are drawn mainly from the annual International Conferences on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets. Selected papers from the latest conference are independently refereed, and revised and extended as necessary. Some further papers submitted directly to the editor are included. Advances in Petri Nets 1991 covers the 11th International Conference on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets held in Paris, France in June 1991. The volume contains the Bibliography of Petri Nets 1990 prepared by H. Pl}nnecke and W. Reisig, with over 4000 entries.

This volume contains the proceedings of the 16th International Symposium on Mathematical Foundations of Computer Science, MFCS '91, held in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, September 9-13, 1991. The series of MFCS symposia, organized alternately in Poland and Czechoslovakia since 1972, has a long and well established tradition. The purpose of the series is to encourage high-quality research in all branches of theoretical computer science and to bring together specialists working actively in the area. Principal areas of interest in this symposium include: software specification and development, parallel and distributed computing, logic and semantics of programs, algorithms, automata and formal languages, complexity and computability theory, and others. The volume contains 5 invited papers by distinguished scientists and 38 contributions selected from a total of 109 submitted papers.

This is the latest volume in the 'Workshops in Computing' series, and contains papers from the International Workshop on Hpyermedia Design, held in Montpellier, France, from 1 - 2 June 1995. The workshop aimed to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners from a variety of backgrounds to discuss the many facets of hypermedia design. Among the specific topics covered by the papers are: design methods, multimedia modelling, higher structures in hypermedia design spaces, user-interface design for hypermedia, building distributed web applications, and hyperdialogs. The resulting volume provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in this important field. It will be of interest to researchers, practitioners and students involved in any aspect of hypermedia design.
