This volume contains the proceedings of the Seventh Mediterranean Ad Hoc Networking Workshop (Med-Hoc-Net'2008), celebrated in Palma de Mallorca (llles Balears, Spain) during June 25-27, 2008. This IFIP TC6 Workshop was organized by the Universitat de les Illes Balears in cooperation with the Asociaci6n de Tdcnicos de lnform~tica and sponsored by the following Working Groups: WG6.3 (Performance of Computer Networks) and WG6.8 (Mobile and Wireless Communications). The rapid evolution of the networking industry introduces new exciting challenges that need to be explored by the research community. Aside the adoption of Internet as the global network infrastructure these last years have shown the growing of a set of new network architectures without a rigid and known a priori architecture using wireless techniques, like sensor and ad-hoc networks. These new types of networks are opening the possibility to create a large number of new applications ranging from domestic to nature surveying. These new networks are generating new technical challenges like the capability of auto-reconfiguration in order to give the network an optimal configuration, the energy saving need when the nodes have not a source of energy other than a small battery, new protocols to access the network and to convey the information across the network when its structure is not completely known or should be discovered, new paradigms for keeping the needed information security and privacy in a quite uncontrolled environment, and others.

This book presents the latest research results in the area of secure localization for both wireless mobile ad hoc networks and wireless sensor networks. It is suitable as a text for computer science courses in wireless systems and security. It includes implementation studies with mica2 mote sensors. Due to the open spectrum nature of wireless communication, it is subject to attacks and intrusions. Hence the wireless network synchronization needs to be both robust and secure. Furthermore, issues such as energy constraints and mobility make the localization process even more challenging. The book will also interest developers of secure wireless systems.

This book has a collection of chapters written by eminent researchers in diverse areas of ad hoc networks, spanning mobile and vehicular ad hoc networks, static, mobile and underwater sensor networks as well as cognitive radio networks. The chapters cover a wide range of theoretical as well as practical issues in ad hoc networks. The chapters present the latest advancement in the above areas with respect to the communication paradigms and protocols, network topology, coverage and tracking, mobility models and performance analysis. Though written by different authors, the chapters have been meticulously reviewed, edited and organized to present a coherent flow and transition from one chapter to another. The book could be adopted as a reference book for any graduate-level course in wireless networks and it can be used for advanced research in ad hoc networks as well. In addition to discussing efficient solutions for various problems in ad hoc networks, the chapters present several open problems and potential solution strategies and approaches that can be further worked on by interested researchers. Each chapter (featuring a sub area of ad hoc network) is written in such a way that it presents an adequate introduction to the topic and the relevant background work. The book is edited in such a way that it is self-contained and the topic presented can be easily understood with minimal background knowledge in the area of ad hoc networks. At the same time, the chapters address complex research problems that have been hitherto not comprehensively presented in any book on ad hoc networks.

The optimization of traffic management operations has become a considerable challenge in today’s global scope due to the significant increase in the number of vehicles, traffic congestions, and automobile accidents. Fortunately, there has been substantial progress in the application of intelligent computing devices to transportation processes. Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) are a specific practice that merges the connectivity of wireless technologies with smart vehicles. Despite its relevance, empirical research is lacking on the developments being made in VANETs and how certain intelligent technologies are being applied within transportation systems. IoT and Cloud Computing Advancements in Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks provides emerging research exploring the theoretical and practical aspects of intelligent transportation systems and analyzing the modern techniques that are being applied to smart vehicles through cloud technology. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as health monitoring, node localization, and fault tolerance, this book is ideally designed for network designers, developers, analysists, IT specialists, computing professionals, researchers, academics, and post-graduate students seeking current research on emerging computing concepts and developments in vehicular ad-hoc networks.
