Many fundamental aspects of the methods used in mass spectrometry are here presented by outstanding scientists, with reference to very recent developments. The principles and applications of electrospray, ion spray and MALDI ionization technique are presented, together with optimised GC/MS interfacing systems and tools for quantitative analysis. A comprehensive treatment of modern instrumentation for mass analysis and detection is also included. The major part of the book deals with bioanalytical applications to peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides, polysaccharides, lipids and plant metabolites. Several papers are devoted to the evaluation of adduct formation between DNA and carcinogens. Environmental applications are also included, with examples of some specific cases. Fundamentals and applications are treated with the same degree of depth: the first two parts of the book therefore provide a basis for the understanding of the biomolecular applications section. Audience: Ideal for advanced graduate students of chemistry who have learned some basic mass spectrometry. Also useful for Ph.D. students in chemistry, biology and medicine. Of value to researchers in academic and industrial laboratories.

In the last chapter I present our new discovery that FAB mass spectrometry in the negative ion mode can be used to unambiguously distinguish between cis- and trans- isomers of monounsaturated fatty acids by the relative strengths of two signals in the mass spectrum. I show the results of six fatty acids and demonstrate that under normal FAB ionization/desorption conditions, the deprotonated molecules [M-H]- of fatty acids undergo CRF. A characteristic fragmentation pattern of two intense clusters of mass peaks with three weak intervening peak-clusters can be used in each case to identify the position of the double bond. I also discuss the possibility of REC occurring during the FAB process.

Advanced Mass Spectrometry: Applications in Organic and Analytical Chemistry discusses the concepts that are essential in the effective utilization of mass spectrometry. The title particularly covers the fundamentals of the modern techniques, along with the technological concerns of mass spectrometry. The opening chapter of the selection introduces mass spectrometry, while the subsequent chapters cover the fundamentals and hardware. The next chapters talk about the analytical chemistry consequences and the ion-genetic relationships. The remaining chapter covers the application of mass spectrometry, which includes structural, mechanistic, chemical, and biochemical applications. The book will be of great use to organic and analytical chemists. Chemists from other branch of chemistry, along with practitioners of related fields such as chemical engineering will also benefit from the text.
