“Shows us why the actions that prepare us for emergencies and energy descent are the right things to do no matter what the future brings.” —Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden Other books tell us how to live the good life—but you might have to win the lottery to do it. Making Home is about improving life with the real people around us and the resources we already have. While encouraging us to be more resilient in the face of hard times, author Sharon Astyk also points out the beauty, grace, and elegance that result, because getting the most out of everything we use is a way of transforming our lives into something much more fulfilling. Written from the perspective of a family who has already made this transition, Making Home shows readers how to turn the challenge of living with less into settling for more—more happiness, more security, and more peace of mind. Learn simple but effective strategies to: · Save money on everything from heating and cooling to refrigeration, laundry, water, sanitation, cooking, and cleaning · Create a stronger, more resilient family · Preserve more for future generations We must make fundamental changes to our way of life in the face of ongoing economic crisis and energy depletion. Making Home takes the fear out of this prospect, and invites us to embrace a simpler, more abundant reality. “Americans are born to be transient—Sharon Astyk has the prescription for dealing with that genetic disease, and building a healthy nativeness into our lives.” —Bill McKibben, New York Times–bestselling author “Exhaustively researched and compassionately delivered.” —Harriet Fasenfest, author of A Householder’s Guide to the Universe

Most existing housing offers a poor fit for older people and people with disabilities, and new construction adds less than 2 per cent to the housing each year. Ninety-nine percent of the housing that will be in use in the year 2000 exists today. The long-needed anthology "Staying Put: Adapting the Places Instead of the People" emphasizes the disabilities and abilities of environments instead of individuals. With contributions from leading authorities, it integrates a wide range of theoretical and practical ideas about housing adaptation for researchers, students, consumers, policymakers, and practitioners in human services and the building trades.

The problem we all share is that nearly 100% of traditional homes are not adaptable and do not offer answers and solutions for the diverse home needs of today. They are not inclusive to all their residents, and this unforgivable situation was primarily due to a lack of consideration or awareness. This situation is not unique to the time and persists today. Many factors have contributed to home inaccessibility throughout history, and we will investigate the downfalls in my book. As a home accessibility specialist, I hope my book will teach you how to recognize and overcome many inaccessible obstacles within your home to benefit all needs and generations. With professional help, you can adapt almost any home environment to enable you and everyone else in the family to live within it to the fullest extent safely, ultimately creating a forever home. You no longer have to move from house to house to accommodate the changing needs of the day. For example, suppose your aging mother or father comes to live with you and has mobility issues preventing them from getting into the front door or shower safely. In that case, this book will advise you on the best practices for the situation. If you are a grandparent taking in small children as housemates, my book will lay out the best Universal Design ideas for the circumstance. If you are a parent of a disabled child, this book will teach you how to remedy many challenging obstacles through accessible design while helping to keep the child more comfortable. Universal Design or inclusive design is a design and building pathway that makes homes more accessible to all regardless of their size, mobility, or ability when appropriately used. It addresses the requirements of special needs families or multigenerational relationships. In retrospect, solutions for diverse living conditions are now possible using correct Universal Designs. Use the information in this book as a guide for creating a forever home to help deal with all diverse family circumstances. Furthermore, my book will relinquish your "just for now" attitude about your family home. It will point you toward what makes up a forever home in a realistic way simply by incorporating the elements of Universal Design during periodic remodeling projects. The book also stands as a guidepost for building new homes capable of aging with you while avoiding future modifications except in extreme conditions. The sustainable forever home has the unique qualities of flexibility and longevity for its diverse residents, adapting to their changing needs over time, unlike the existing inventory of traditional inaccessible homes. The construction techniques used to bring Universal Design into reality are not specialized. The methodology is more cautiously considered and executed so that every family member has equal accessibility. IT JUST MAKES GOOD SENSE.

This book considers the hundred years of re-writes of Anton Chekhov’s work, presenting a wide geographical landscape of Chekhovian influences in drama. The volume examines the elusive quality of Chekhov’s dramatic universe as an intricate mechanism, an engine in which his enigmatic characters exist as the dramatic and psychological ciphers we have been de-coding for a century, and continue to do so. Examining the practice and the theory of dramatic adaptation both as intermedial transformation (from page to stage) and as intramedial mutation, from page to page, the book presents adaptation as the emerging genre of drama, theatre, and film. This trend marks the performative and social practices of the new millennium, highlighting our epoch’s need to engage with the history of dramatic forms and their evolution. The collection demonstrates that adaptation as the practice of transformation and as a re-thinking of habitual dramatic norms and genre definitions leads to the rejuvenation of existing dramatic and performative standards, pioneering the creation of new traditions and expectations. As the major mode of the storytelling imagination, adaptation can build upon and drive the audience’s horizons of expectations in theatre aesthetics. Hence, this volume investigates the original and transformative knowledge that the story of Chekhov’s drama in mutations offers to scholars of drama and performance, to students of modern literatures and cultures, and to theatre practitioners worldwide.
