The Bible is one of the most ancient of human records, so Genesis is relevant to men of every generation, particularly to the modern man, after all, the creation of the Universe and mankind are decidedly the main event and the most dramatic and scientific innovation of natural existence. The insights in this fantastic account are available for edification and enjoyment. God was very considerate to preserve this diary of events for mankind and therefore Bible students should drink deeply from its fountain of truths and records of beginnings. Genesis is a primitive text, yet it is profound and meaningful as it unfolds the history and eternal future of the human race. The staggering knowledge and details that God revealed to Moses at Mount Sinai were imparted to encourage all who seek eternal assurance, and to reveal the absolute certainty that chance was never a component in God's redemption plan. Let me talk about consciousness: something that breathes and is aware of its existence, because the great stars and bodies in the universe have no consciousness of their existence. Science skirts around the issues and can explain the mechanics even down to the smallest molecules, but life and conscious life is still a phenomenon that flummoxes scientists; they just don't know. No doubt they will keep on investigating and searching for the genesis of life; in the meantime there is silence. So if I cannot get any suitable answers from scientists, to who or what shall I turn to for an alternative answer? Let's try the Bible and see what it says.

Were the biblical Adam and Eve historical figures, or are the early events described in Genesis primarily symbolic in nature? Behind the debate of a historical Adam is the age-old debate about evolution and the agreement between Scripture and science. With an introduction that outlines the history and main points of every viewpoint from Darwinism to Young Earth Creationism, this book then clearly outlines four primary views on Adam held by evangelical Christians. Contributors include Denis O. Lamoureux, John H. Walton, C. John Collins, and William Barrick. Each focuses his essay on answering the following questions: What is the biblical case for your viewpoint, and how do you reconcile it both with modern science and with passages and potential interpretations that seem to counter it? In what ways is your view more theologically consistent and coherent than other views? What are the implications of your view for the spiritual life and public witness of the church and individual believers, and how is your view a healthier alternative for both? This book allows each contributor to not only present the case for his view, but also to critique and respond to the critiques of the other contributors, allowing you to compare their beliefs in an open forum setting to see where they overlap and where they differ. Concluding reflections by pastor-scholars Gregory A. Boyd and Philip Graham Ryken highlight the significance of the topic in the faith of everyday believers. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.

As described in the Bible, Adam is the biological father of all humanity. In Adam, author Dr. R. C. Besteder studies the behavior of this first human being on earth, created by God as a perfect being. Besteder provides a comprehensive look into his life, the ways that his creation relates to modern society, and the messages his life communicates for humans today. This study bridges a gap between nations and religions through Adam and shows how his existence touches every aspect of our lives. Through biblical references and Scripture, Besteder uses the life of Adam as a basis of education for topics relevant for contemporary living, such as racism, marriage, sexuality, faith, and capital punishment. Besteder shows how our knowledge of Adam gives every individual dignity, significance, and purpose. It helps us to understand why each of us has tremendous potential, and it gives us hope, a desire to take care of our planet, and a reason to be at peace with all the people of our world.
