Pratt, a recruiting officer, verifies receipt of funds from Wadsworth on account of the Recruiting Service.

Wadsworth comments on an escaped slave or servant: Mrs. Greene left us last Monday for Charleston Via N York on the night before she went away- her molatto man servant Ham left her & has been heard of on his way to Boston. she wishes to regain him he has been a favorite from his infancy & brot up un the family- as damed a rascal as [ever] was unhanged- & if I could now get him to Georgia she would sell him... I will have some body bring him away privately for I am told to do it publicly is impossible in Boston. Notes that his cousin, James Wadsworth, and other anti-Federalists have lost their influence in the [Connecticut] assembly. Says The [antis] are making one more effort in ye Election of Assembly Men for the new Congress - but will fail! Docket notes this letter was received and answered 5 November.

Discusses the recruitment of troops. Writes, I have farther investigated the Bermuda business I am persuaded there will be a Garrison [there] of one or two thousand men... referring to British soldiers. Refers to the possible adoption of the Constitution by Virginia and North Carolina. Writes, This State as well as Massachusetts will be represented & [Governed] principally by federal Men- and I begin to hope our new Machine will be put in motion in all this Year. Mentions the opposition of Rhode Island and New York to the Constitution. Notes that George Washington Greene, son of Catherine Littlefield Greene and the late General Nathanael Greene, is on his way to Knox's house (Knox and Wadsworth arranged passage for G. W. Greene to France, where he obtained an education under the care of Lafayette). Instructs Knox that Nicholas Hoffman will attend to George during the passage, noting that it may be proper to give George a small sum to put in his pocket.... but a little will do he is a dissipated young dog and would buy every thing he could find valuable or worthless.

Discusses military matters, possibly related to gathering troops to march to Fort Pitt. Remarks, Lt. Pratt went of [sic] with a heavy Heart he hoped to have seen you- he has been very industrious & indefatigable- (Pratt was gathering men to march to Fort Pitt and was disappointed in his own pay and the lack of pay granted to some of his men; refer to GLC02437.04013).
