Le terme “Service” a orienté les travaux de recherche et de formation lors du XIIIème Congrès de l'Association Internationale de Formation et de Recherche en Education Familiale (AIFREF). Il s'agissait, en l'occurrence, de se mettre au service de la petite enfance. L'acte qui consiste à se consacrer au service d'un être qui chemine sur la voie de l'autonomie a pris une consistance et une importance sans cesse croissantes au cours du développement de la modernité. Aujourd'hui, celle-ci connaît une profonde mutation : entrant dans la postmodernité, nous constatons que la notion de service prend un tout autre sens. Pour mieux être au service de l'enfance, il s'agit maintenant de savoir ce qui peut lui être utile. Qu'est-ce qui permet à l'enfant de grandir et de s'émanciper? Et, dès lors, quels services convient-il de rendre à l'enfance? Quelles sont la relevance, l'efficience, l'efficacité et la durabilité de ces services délibérément conçus et opérationnalisés? Ces questions ont fait l'objet d'une mise en examen et ont orienté les travaux du XIIIème Congrès de l'AIFREF.

Children and parents have become a focus of debates on ‘new social risks’ in European welfare states. Policymaking elites have converged in defining such risks, and they have outlined new forms of parenting support to better safeguard children and activate their potential. Increasingly, parents are suspected of falling short of public expectations. Contributors to this special issue scrutinize this shift towards parenting as performance and analyse recent forms of parenting support.

This publication is an element of the Council of Europe's recent work in the field of positive parenting leading up To The Committee of Ministers' Recommendation Rec (2006) 19 on policy to support positive parenting. The authors review and analyse the major changes affecting parenting in Europe, arising from legal situations, research and practice. This work addresses the core issues related to positive parenting and non-violent upbringing, with particular emphasis on parents' entitlement to support from the state in carrying out their parental tasks. Five themes are focused upon: The legal situation And The results of research: what it means to be a parent according To The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, The Council of Europe and new scientific knowledge; current thinking on the use of violence and corporal punishment against children; responses to family policy, especially in terms of support programs and services for parenting and families; the particular problems and needs of parents and children in situations of social exclusion; And The relationship between parenting and drug-related behavior among children and teenagers. The book also includes the text of the Recommendation Rec(2006)19, "Keys for parents" and "Guidelines for professionals.

The Family System Test (FAST) is a versatile clinical and research tool which can be used in individual and family settings with respondents as young as six years. This clinically-derived figure placement technique was designed to evaluate cohesion and hierarchy in the family and its subsystems in a variety of situations. Cohesion is represented by the distance between figures on the board. Hierarchy is represented by the elevation of figures with blocks.
