Excerpt from A Treatise on the Lord's Supper: Designed as a Guide and Companion to the Holy Communion In these words of Hooker, is pointed out the true nature and use of a sacrament. The grace we Obtain by a right reception Of the Lord's Supper is the participation of Christ, and of life through him. The Apostle's words on this point are express - The cap of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ For we being many are one bread and one body, for we are all partakers of that one bread. The unworthy receiver forfeits the blessing, (1 Cor. Xi. Just as the unworthy conduct of many in Israel forfeited the blessing designed by that spiritual meat of which they all ate, and that spiritual drink Of which they all drank. But it was not the less, Spiritual meat and spiritual drink, conveying to true believers in types, Christ and his grace, and real par ticipation of spiritual blessings.
