Excerpt from A Treatise on Algebra, Vol. 2 I have not entered further into the general theory of equations than was necessary to enable me to exhibit the theory of their general solution, as far it can be carried by existing methods, reserving the more complete exposition of their properties and of the methods employed for their numerical solution, to a subsequent volume. Excerpt from A Treatise on Algebra The following work is designed for the use of the higher classes of Schools and the junior students in the Universities. Although the book is complete in itself, in the sense that it begins at the beginning, it is expected that students who use it will have previously read some more elementary work on Algebra: the simpler parts of the subject are therefore treated somewhat briefly. I have ventured to make one important change from the usual order adopted in English text-books on Algebra, namely by considering some of the tests of the conver geney of infinite series before making any use of such series: this change will, I feel sure, be generally approved. The order in which the different chapters of the book may be read is, however, to a great extent optional. Excerpt from Ray's Algebra, Vol. 2: An Analytical Treatise, Designed for High Schools and Colleges On some subjects it was necessary to be brief, to bring the work within suitable limits. For example, what is here given of the Theory of Equations, is to be regarded merely as an outline of the more practical and interesting parts of the subject, which alone is suficient for a distinct treatise, as may' be seen by refer ring to the works of Young or Hymera in English, or of defourcy er Reynaud in French. Some topics and exercises deemed both useful and interesting. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Algebra, Vol. 2: An Elementary Text-Book for the Higher Classes of Secondary Schools and for Colleges The delay in the appearance of this volume finds an apology partly in circumstances of a private character, partly in public engagements that could not he declined, but most of all in the growth of the work itself as it progressed in my hands. I have not, as some one prophesied, reached ten volumes; but the present concluding volume is somewhat larger and has cost me infinitely more trouble than I expected. Excerpt from Treatise on Algebra The first edition of my Algebra was received with unex pected favor. Almost immediately after its publication, it was adopted as a text-book in half a dozen colleges, besides nu morons academies and schools; and the most flattering testi monials were received from every part of the country. I have thus been stimulated to increased exertions to render it less unworthy of public favor. Every line of it has been sub jected to a thorough revision. The work has been read by two successive classes in the University, and wherever im provement seemed practicable, alterations have been freely made. I have also availed myself of the suggestions of sev eral professors in other colleges. This edition will accord ingly be found to differ considerably from the preceding. Alc terations, more or less important, have been made on nearly every page. Among these may be mentioned the addition of Continued Fractions, the Extraction of the Roots of Numbers, Elimination by means of the Greatest Common Divisor, and a large collection of Miscellaneous Examples.
