Excerpt from A Study of the Methods Employed in Coal Analysis The methods found in this committee's report (2) have become known as the Official Methods. Their suggestions for the sampling of coal are those, in the main, which are used in ore sampling. The Official Method for the determination of Moisture is as follows: Dry a one gram sample of the coal in an open porcelain or platinum crucible at 104-1070 for an hour, best in a double-walled bath containing toluene. Cool in a desiccator and weigh covered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Method of Least Squares Applied to Estimating Errors in Coal Analysis In this paper, which is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the increase of efficiency in; the utilization of fuel, the authors have sought to describe a definite method for estimating the probable limits Of error in analyzing samples of coal, and to show how this method, that of least squares, should be applied. Bailey 0 has shown that the method of least squares is applicable to the problem of sampling coal; it can be used to determine the limits of accuracy of sampling and for preparing standardized methods of sampling, but so far as the authors know the accuracy of the ordinary methods oi analyzing coal has not yet been investi gated by a mathematical method. It is customary to estimate the limits of accuracy of analysis by observing the agreement of duplicate determinations; that is, from general experience with a given kind of analysis. Hence, as some sets of duplicates are found to agree more closely than others, this question arises: What is the widest variation and What is about the average variation reasonably to be expected? Or, in other Words the question is: What is the magnitude of the probable error of a single determination and what is the maximum error to be expected, say, once in determinations? Excerpt from The Methods of the United States Steel Corporation: For the Commercial Sampling and Analysis of Coal, Coke and by-Products Most coals occur in horizontal layers and also in vertical laminations, and; when coal is being mined so that the face of the laminations is exposed, it is described as being on the face; when exposing the ends, it is described as being on the butt. A face or butt sample is taken mainly for information relative to Operating purposes. Channel samples should be taken preferably on the butt, for the reason that it is easier to cut a true channel there. Excerpt from Methods of Analyzing Coal and Coke The loss Of weight by air-drying is not regarded as an accurate determination, and the air-drying loss reported in an analysis simply means that the sample lost the stated percentage of moisture before it came to a condition Of approximate moisture equilibrium with the air Of the room, at a temperature Of 30° to 35° C.
