"The focus of the current study was upon the attitudes of professionals in the Los Angeles County Probation Department and the City of Los Angeles Police Department toward a diversion program, namely, the Neighborhood Adult Participation Program (NAPP) Drug Abuse Diversion Program, Los Angeles, California...The purpose of the study was to determine if professionals in the juvenile justice system felt that a diversion drug abuse program would be effective in the rehabilitation of juveniles into society without incarceration...The general research question involved in the current study may be stated thus: What are the attitudes of employees of the criminal justice system toward drug diversion programs? This cross-sectional survey examines probation officers attitudes towards offenders with mental illness (OMI) using demographic data and the Community Attitudes Toward the Mentally Ill (CAMI) scale, following community demonstrations for systemic criminal justice reforms in 2020. Results indicate officers exhibit elevated attitudes of Benevolence and Community Mental Health Ideology towards OMI, which indicates fewer stigmatizing beliefs towards OMI than previous research. Implications for practice and future research are discussed..

Adolescent girls have a reputation for being the most undesirable population to work with in the judicial and correctional systems. This reputation is largely due to the heavy stigmatization of juvenile girls who do not behave in ways that are consistent with traditional standards of femininity. In this study, I examine probation officers' interactions with their juvenile clients. I closely noted differences and similarities in the treatment given to boys and girls and where various strategies tend to be either beneficial or unsuccessful.
