Excerpt from Oklahoma, Vol. 4: A History of the State and Its People Clinton O. Shaffer represents one of the influential business men of Arnett, who is conducting farming on a small scale along with his insurance busi ness. His father, William Shaffer, was by trade a carpenter, and after his marriage to Ellen Bobb, who was like himself a native of Pennsylvania, they moved to Harrisonville, Missouri, where he found opportunity for applying his trade. In 1903, they came to Okla homa, and settled in the town of Guymon, Beaver County. Ellen (bobb) Shaffer is now deceased. She was the mother of the following children: Clinton O., who is the subject of this review; Mary, who died in 1926; and Pearl, who became the wife of William N. Mitchell, of Arnett. Clinton 0. Shaffer came to Ellis County, Oklahoma, in the year 1900, and filed a claim two miles west of the town of Arnett. For eight years he operated his farm land, meeting with the usual degree of success, then he bought the local telephone business, which system he operated until 1928, when he started the insurance business. This business is proving quite profitable to him, and allows him time to devote to the operation of a small farm. A public-spirited citizen, he is always ready to lend his services where he believes them to be of value to the community. He is now serving as constable of the town of Arnett. Frater nally, he is a member of the Free and Accepted Masons; the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; and the Mod ern Woodmen of America. Mr. Shaffer's wife, Lucy Myers, whom he married August 23, 1893, was a native of Germany. They have a family of six children: I. Vera, their eldest child, is the wife of C. N. Twaddell, of Amarillo, Texas. 2. Edith, a twin, is the wife of Albert Hatha way, of Clinton, Oklahoma. 3. Edna, the other twin, is unmarried, and resides at home. 4. Wilford. 5. Grace. 6. Lorene, are the three youngest and reside at home. They also had a son William, who is now deceased. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Standard History of Oklahoma, Vol. 1: An Authentic Narrative of Its Development From the Date of the First European Exploration Down to the Present Time The writer of this work has to thank many friends for assistance kindly lent and suggestions generously offered in the collection and arrangement of the material therefor. It would be a real pleasure to mention by name all who have thus contributed to the interest and completeness of the work, were it not that the enumeration would scarcely serve to convey the distinction intended and de served. Especial acknowledgments are due to Dr. Emmet Starr, of Tahlequah; to Hon. J. F. Weaver, of Fort Smith; to Rev. Dr. J. S. Murrow, of Atoka; to Mr. W. P. Campbell, custodian of the Oklahoma Historical Society, and to Professors J. S. Buchanan and Roy L. Gittinger, of the Department of History in the University of Oklahoma, with all of whom the writer has had occasion to consult more or less frequently. Most of the advisory editors have also been laid under tribute for similar assistance and all have readily responded, including the two worthy pioneers - Hon. Neal Evans, of El Reno, and Hon. Z. T. Walrond, of Muskogee - both of whom died after the work was well under way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of the State of Oklahoma, Vol. 1 In presenting A History of the State of Oklahoma the publishers feel that little explanation is necessary. The work describes the evolution of a state, and has been prepared according to the original design that it should be a standard, comprehensive and authentic reference work. As a casual examination will show, the history is based upon the original sources, and authorities are quoted to prove practically every assertion made. It should be stated that this is a pioneer work in this field; that no previous attempt has been successfully made to compile, on such an extensive scale, the historical informa tion that pertains to Oklahoma and the Indian Territory. The material for such an undertaking does not exist within the State of Oklahoma, the records being available in the larger collections of older libraries and in the government archives. For the events of later years, much valuable information has been obtained from individuals in Okla homa and elsewhere. In the preparation of the history the author is particularly indebted to Hon. Sidney Clarke, of Oklahoma City, who besides furnishing a large amount of data in the nature of documents and manuscript, has also read the greater portion of the general history and has given the benefit of his wide personal knowledge in revising and correcting the historical material.
