Italic Letters. 116. Italic letters are those which stand inclining. This sentence is printed in Italics. When an author wishes to distinguish a particular word or phrase for the sake of emphasis, or for any other purpose, it is generally printed in Italics: "I'll keep them all; he shall not have a Scot of them." In writing it is customary to underline such words as would be italicized in printing: This is also called underscoring. When a word is used merely as a word, it should generally be printed in Italics: "Wlio is applied to persons, and which to animals and inanimate things."--Murray. Sentences of special importance are often printed entirely in Italics. When a word or phrase embodied in an Italic sentence is to be distinguished from the rest, it is sometimes printed in Roman letters and sometimes in full-face type: "The grand clue to all syntactical parsing is the sense."--G.
