"Sometimes I have thought that this school is like the only place where the lilies are considered at all..." In this stirring account of a teacher and his fourteen students tucked away in the Green Mountains of Vermont, educator Tal Birdsey fervently documents the founding year of his small junior high school with wit and humility. Part memoir, part meditation on the power of art and poetry, and part criticism of standardized education, A Room for Learning evokes a spirit of change, in which students were allowed a hand in their own education. With no set curriculum, no prior history, and limited resources, the students delve deep into the poetry of Yeats and Bukowski, the music of Coltrane, the art of Caravaggio, and the emotional landscape of Elie Wiesel's "Night", with each student learning to offer his or her own personal insights. But they also take time out, to be outside amidst the pinecones and fresh air, to be the kids that they still sometimes are and to learn from one another. Isolated from mainstream culture and constantly on the brink of apathy, this diverse group of kids and a teacher created a literary community and celebrated learning and themselves. A Room for Learning is the poignant true story of how one small school demonstrated that a classroom can be a place of transformative power.

Every profession has its own language. Education is no exception and like other professions, the language of education is often incomprehensible to those outside the field. This book is the author's attempt to explain in everyday language the esoteric terms, expressions, and buzzwords used in U.S. education today.--[from preface].

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Groupware (CRIWG 2003). The conference was held in the city of Autrans, on the spectacular Vercors plateau in the foothills of the French Alps. The or- nizing committee could not have thought of a better setting to inspire lively discussions and re?ection on open issues facing the ?eld of groupware. The CRIWG workshops have been motivated by advances in Computer- Supported Cooperative Work, and by the need for CSCW to meet the challenges of new application areas. With this ninth meeting, CRIWG aimed to provide a forum for academic researchers and professionals to exchange their experiences and ideas about problems and solutions related to the design, development, and use of groupware applications. The selection of papers followed a strict refereeing process by a renowned international committee. We received 84 contributions with ?rst authors from 21 di?erent countries, from which 30 papers were selected to be presented and published in this proceedings volume. The papers in these proceedings include 18longpaperspresentingmatureworkand12shortpapersdescribingpromising work in progress in the ?eld. We thank all members of the Program Committee for their valuable reviews of the papers. In addition, we were pleased to have as invited speaker Prof. Saul Greenberg from the University of Calgary in Canada, a renowned specialist in Groupware and HCI. An extended abstract of his lecture is included in these proceedings.
